What to ask potential Sunshine Coast lawyers, solicitors or an attorney
In order to get the most efficient use of time and money from your legal endeavours, it always pays to make sure you are on the right track to begin with. Visiting legal firm after legal firm will cost you time which in most cases converts to money. An easy way to remove these hurdles is to ask a few questions in your meeting with your lawyer and to ask a few over the telephone before you pay them a visit.
Many legal firms charge for your first visit whether they act on your behalf on not. So make sure you clear that up before you visit and ask how much any intended meeting will cost you or is the first meeting free.
Here are some questions to ask;
- Do you or does your firm have experience with my specific legal issue?
Many firms specialise in a particular area of law and others have a number of specialists working out of the one firm. Make sure you ask for that information. You want representation from someone who knows their way around the block.
- Would you be the person I would be working with?
In a meeting always ask if you will be working with the person you are currently meeting with. You do not want to be fobbed off after you have made a commitment to a clerk or junior especially if you think your case is important. I'm sure it is otherwise you would not be there - right?
- What is the expected duration of this kind of case?
The last thing you want is to have a meeting somewhere else but you have not finished explaining things to your lawyer. So it is always a good idea to ask how long should you plan around the meeting on the telephone. Make sure you have prepared for the meeting with what you would expect the solicitor or lawyer might need. Most lawyers are skilled at asking questions accurately and will evoke the right information from you efficiently. That said, if you babble on too much you may end up paying for that extra unnecessary time. Be time conscious and prepared and you may reduce your costs significantly.
- What can I expect to outlay in costs?
Always, always ask what transactions and costs to expect. Don't leave your first meeting without getting a ball park figure. It's near impossible for the attorney to be dead accurate though unless they are only preparing a letter or similar on your behalf.
I hope some of these points help your legal experiences with Sunshine Coast lawyers or with any lawyer for that matter.
