Overview
The town Estepona is a municipality in the Costa del Sol region in the southern part of Spain. It is situated in the Málaga province which is a part of Andalusia autonomous Community. It is a highly popular holiday resort because of the two blue flag beaches (2 nos.) in this place. The population of this town is about 60,000; however there is a floating population because of the large number of tourists.
This town is surrounded by the mountains – Sierra Bermeja and the sea and it has sunshine for 325 days in a year. The sports marina in this place is modern and has many restaurants and tapas bars. The town is white-walled and has a number of attractive shopping squares. During the year 1990, Walt Disney management chose this place initially for its Euro Disney project against tough competition; however it was given to France later.
The airports that are near this place are Gibralter and Málaga airports.
History
Based on the ceramics and foundations discovered by archaeologists, it was assessed that this town came into being during Roman times. The origin for this name could be from Moorish Astabbuna. The King of Castile, Henry IV, captured this town in 1457 from the Moors. During this period, a church was constructed at a location where there was a mosque.
Art and Culture
Popular monuments in this place are – Clock tower of the town, Castle of San Luis, Los Remedios church and the original bullring.
The fishing fleet in this town is one of the largest and the fishes are auctioned daily at dawn.
Cuisine
Although Estepona falls in the Costa del Sol region, it does not have night club activity. There are a large number of bars and restaurants serving Mediterranean and Spanish cuisines; different varieties of fishes are cooked and served. You can also get French and Italian dishes. Fast food restaurants such as McDonald's and Burger King also exist.
Entertainment and Sports
Golf is a popular sport in this town and there are many popular golf courses existing here.
Popular beaches in this place are – Cristo beach, La Rada beach and Costa Natura nudist beach.
Shopping
Local shops in this town sell items manufactured locally. You can also find boutiques in the center of the town that sell international goods of popular brands. The Sunday market has items that are suited for the tourists.
