On Friday morning, the Breeders Cup will officially announce the 2011 year-end event of the organization and that, according to certain officials with this knowledge; it will be taking place at Louisville’s Churchill Downs. This November, Churchill is also scheduled to host the 2010 Breeders’ Cup.

Supposedly the Breeders Cup decided upon Churchill Downs again being the 2011 site mainly due to uncertainty regarding the Oak Tree meet at the Santa Anita as well as the yet to be resolved political and economic issues in New York.

Having hoped to be able to announce a more long-term schedule, the Breeders Cup was unable to because of how the recent developments in both New York and California. Churchill Down was actually referred to as a "Plan B".

MI Developments, the owner of Santa Anita Park, voided the lease that they had with Oak Tree for a fall meet and it is expected that Oak Tree will hold its nonprofit meet for 2011 at Hollywood Park. The chairman of the New York Racing Association and operator of the Belmont, C. Steven Dunker announced that the Breeders Cup had never discussed with them the possibility of hosting their event at the Belmont but maintains that the Belmont is an option.

The Breeders Cup has been hosted six times by Churchill Downs and it appears now that they will soon host it for a seventh time this year once November rolls around. This makes it the second time in the history of the Breeders Cup that the event will take place at the same track it did in the last year as Santa Anita park hosted the Breeders Cup in both 2008 and 2009.

Beshear signed a legislation earlier this year that will result in the rescinding of tax breaks that the 2010 Breeders’ Cup might otherwise enjoy if they do not commit to having a track in Kentucky host the event in either 2011 or 2012.

Kentucky State Sen. Damon Thayer, who is a former Breeders Cup employee and sponsored the legislation that enabled the tax breaks, mentioned that he estimates that the tax break results in around $1 million dollars every time the event is held in Kentucky. While he claims he has no information regarding the 2011 event, he hopes that in this economy a $1 million dollar tax break would be motivation enough for the Breeders Cup to take it into consideration.
