Surf Lifesaving Sports at the Bondi Beach

Bondi Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches located along the Sydney coastline also making it one of the best tourist destinations in Australia. Tourists from all around the world flock to Bondi beach to enjoy the sun and the great surf. Located just 7 kilometres east of Sydney central business district it does not give a hint of reclusion, but the sheer beauty of the beach will make you let this one slide.

Bondi is an Aboriginal term meaning - sound of water breaking over the rocks - which is a perfect way to describe the place. Massive waves make Bondi Beach a surfers paradise. Tourists can ride the waves anytime they want at anytime of the year they want.

But with all this beauty you might think that there are no red marks to spoil this beach, but unfortunately Bondi Beach does have its share of gloomy stories. One of these stories happened on February 6, 1938 when a series of large waves struck the beach causing massive property damage and regrettable loss of human lives. When the waves struck the beach over 250 people were injured, while 5 people were drowned because the current pulled them out to sea. That day was forever known now as Black Sunday.

And after the Second World War, Bondi Beach became the landing zone and settlement area for the Jewish immigrants that were forced to leave their home countries because of the Nazis.

There was also the environmentally hazardous business about the untreated sewage outlet that was placed not far from the northern part of the beach by the Sydney Water Board. But thankfully the outlet was closed in the mid 90s because there was no more need for it because a deepwater ocean outfall was completed.

And as with almost all the saltwater bodies in Australia, there is a large risk of shark attacks in Bondi Beach. But this problem was easily rectified by installing an underwater shark net.

But sharks arent the only wildlife you will see on Bondi Beach, you can also see whales and dolphins while they go on their migratory paths, which happen to run close to the beach. There are also Fairy penguins that can be occasionally sighted.

Another selling point of Bondi Beach is the fact that this is where the very first surf life saving club in the world was formed. The Bondi Bathers Surf Lifesaving Club is supposedly the first club of its kind in the world, being established in 1903 and all. This club rescued the most people when the unfortunate incident called Black Sunday happened. The surf club other than keeping the beachgoers safe also hold Surf Carnivals, where members of the club compete with each other in various disciplines of surf lifesaving sports. These events are always jam-packed with spectators wanting to see what the lifesavers life is like.

When travelling to Australia, be sure and visit Bondi Beach, you will regret it if you dont.
