Colour Scheme
If you already have a company logo with assigned colors, use those and continue
with the theme. Otherwise choose two to three complimentary colours
Stick with these colors and use them on every one of your website pages.
Once you designate a design and pattern to those colours stay consistent on
every page. Example: White background, blue writing and orange bordering.
Try downloading or viewing a color wheel. This will help you choose colors
that naturally accent each other. You want to catch your viewers’ eye and make
your business website readable so never use dark colors on top of dark colors.
Most generally used color schemes:
~Red, yellow and white
~Blue and white
~Red, grey and white
~Blue, orange and white
~Yellow, grey and white
~Onion shade, Tan, white
Page Background
The most common mistake here is having a dark background with dark writing or
white background with yellow or light pink writing. I'm sure you have seen such
a site at one time or another while surfing? You will most likely have simply
'clicked off' such a site. This colour scheme is very straining to the viewers’
eyes. White backgrounds are used most often and are safe with darker writing.
If you have a pattern as your page background, make sure the colors stand out
from all the background patterns colors, if your site is not done in black and
white. Be sure that your hyperlink doesn't’t blend before or after it has been
clicked. Links most commonly appear blue before clicked and Burgundy after.
While you can use any colour you choose, blue links are the most commonly used
on line and employing them may make your customers feel at home on your site.
Grammar and Spelling
We are all aware of the spelling and grammar tools on our computers, but
occasionally they don’t catch everything. It’s helpful to print the page out
and review it from a hard copy. The eye sometimes catches mistakes it may not
have seen on the computer display. Have a look over your work - this will help
in locating any mistakes not picked up by your spell checker. Watch out for
grammatical and punctuation mistakes your computer may not apprehend.
Examples include: your, you’re, there, their, its, it’s, viewers’, viewer’s and
some time, sometimes. Also if you are a UK business, don't forget that most
spell checkers are set up to recognise American English spellings only.
Make things simple. Complex colors, backgrounds, or oddly placed words will lead
your viewer away. Be inviting to your audience by making your site ‘easy on the
eyes.’ Don’t forget to proof read – and remember that two heads are better than
one.
Avoid using music as this slows down page loading time and often annoys your
surfers who may be in q quiet place like a library when viewing your site.
Whizzing and spinning text or images are also liable to to confuse people and
flash should be used sparingly also. A little can look stylish, woo much will
prevent the search engines indexing and ranking your site highly.
