Booking a Wildlife Adventure on PEI
Although the land mass is small, Prince Edward Island houses a very large seal colony as well as a host of other wildlife and waterfowl. The seal colony can be found by taking a short cruise down the Murray River. The Murray trip is over smooth water with much less sea motion that can sometimes cause sea sickness.
Ask your travel agent to book space to take advantage of the world famous PEI tourism special seal watching tour boat which are commercially available from all over the island as well as one of the many boutique cottages and hotels. If you are more of the do it yourself type, then call any local tourism office and they will be happy to guide your search through the directory to enhance your PEI Vacation. Another possibility is to wait until you check into your cottage and hotel and then ask the front desk what is locally available. Most of the tours will take you to the eastern end of Prince Edward Island because that is the larger colonies of seals reside.
If you're good in the water, then another way to get a close up look at a seal colony is by renting a kayak or canoe. However, before getting into the water in this fashion, ask the locals about the best and most hospitable places to tour. You also want to be concerned about safety when attempting to view this way. It is important to understand that the wildlife need plenty of space and very little disturbance.
Contact the local Visitors Information Center for advice about the location of the best seal watching areas. The local folks will also be able to tell you where to watch from land should you not want to venture out on the water. There is no time clock when watching from land. You can stay as long as you like. No so with a boat tour, where you at the mercy of the captain's schedule. Most boat tours last a couple of hours at best and much of that is travel time with very little time for watching.
Be on the lookout when your touring or driving from one destination to another as you may actually spot a small seal colony unexpectedly along the ocean side. Just keep your eyes open and your camera at the ready and enjoy the trip. As well along the way don't forget to stop at one of the many other PEI tourist and travel destinations such as Cavendish Beach, Anne of Green Gables, or even a friendly round of golf on one of the world famous PEI Golf Courses.
