According to the Department of Motor Vehicles in New York, when you have suffered personal injury due to the negligence of another driver, you have the right to obtain a New York personal injury attorney and pursue litigation for damages. Pursuit of these damages is significantly enhanced by taking detailed notes pertaining to the accident and injuries.
Taking Notes Regarding the Accident
After having an accident, one of the first things you should do is write down everything you can remember about the accident. Include the following
-
Location
-
Time of day
-
Vehicles involved
-
Individuals involved
Indicate how the accident occurred. Draw diagrams if necessary. Indicate the road conditions, the weather conditions, etc. The more information you record, the better.
Record Contact Information
After the accident, record the driver name, license, insurance, and any other pertinent information. If possible, get contact information from witnesses who may have seen the accident.
Record Injury Information
In the first days following your accident, make daily notes of all pains and discomfort your injuries cause. For example, you may feel discomfort, pain, loss of the ability to fall asleep and more. Have the doctor who evaluates and treats you write a detailed report indicating how the accident is related to your current conditions.
In addition, writing down your different injuries may help your doctor reach a diagnosis for you. For example, a small bump on the head or the neck may not seem worth mentioning, but it might help doctors and others understand why a bad back pain developed several weeks after the accident. Those injuries will become part of your medical records, and may likely provide evidence later that those injuries were caused by the accident.
Record Medical Bill information
Keep a running list of all expenses related to the injury, particularly those that are medical related. These will likely be subject for evaluation in terms of compensation.
Share Notes with your Legal Representative
When pursuing litigation, make sure to provide the information you recorded to your New York injury attorney. This will facilitate a speedier, thorough evaluation of your case, as well as a greater level of ultimate compensation.
As New York personal injury attorneys, we take pride in holding corporations and insurance companies responsible for the injuries they cause in the lives of people who live in New York.
