Nova Scotia Cottages and Hotels-Keijimkujik
The Kejimkujik National Park was established in 1968, and remains an important location in the lore and culture of the Mi'kmaw First Nation. The park is famous for bird watching, canoeing, kayaking, biking or hiking and swimming opportunities. The Park is located two hours from Halifax,so ask our travel agent or front desk clerk for directions. The popular journey is well posted, however, so striking out on your own will garner you a great and leisurely day trip..
The park features the history of the Mi'kmaw heritage, explaining the spiritual significances and well as the culture significances of the area. There is an interpretive center which begins the story of the First Nation people and continues on through other sites in the park.
Birdwatching takes on a whole new meaning with the number of species of birds in the Park. Some of the birds that can be seen include, loons, woodpeckers, cormorants, owls, hawks, warblers, chimney swifts, and goshawks. Most of these birds can be seen year round.
If camping is your thing then be advised that there are more than 400 campsites stretching from Jeremy's Bay Campground, Jim Charles Point Campground, and back country campsites. Reservations must be made if you're interested in staying at Jim Charles.
Much of the Park is accessible only by water or by hiking in. Canoes and Kayaks are available for rent at Jake's Landing. The water off the beaches are warm and more often than not, crowded to overflowing with families. A very popular sport is mountain biking and maps are provided to point out the trails which are for hiking or biking only. There are some mixed use trails, so ask for information before venturing out.
One thing you should take note of is the wildlife. The Park is home to moose and black bear to name two. They roam freely so hikers and campers should be aware of the safe food storage practices on trails in the back country. In fact it is wise to stay out of the back country unless you happen to be an experienced woodsman, or in the company of an experienced guide. Many day trips are available including guided multi day trips to Channel Lake or the fire tower. Ask your travel guide for assistance in booking this tour.
