Salicylic acid is another one in the list of popular acne solutions. Like others on the list, salicylic has proven itself to be effective against the most common forms of acne. Aside from that, it is easily obtainable too because it is an over-the-counter product. That means anyone who wants to get their acne problems fixed only need to ask for salicylic acid from their local pharmacy.
So, if you want to know more about this easily available acne solution, then, you’ve come to the right place. We’ll tell you more about salicylic acid as we move on. Ready? Let’s begin.
What Salicylic Acid Is
As its name suggests, salicylic acid is a form of acid and it is used in a number of applications. Aside from being an anti-acne product, salicylic acid is also used to treat warts, calluses and psoriasis, which is a condition that could lead to redness and scaly patches on the skin.
Why It is Effective Vs. Acne
As we mentioned at the beginning, many people use salicylic acid because of its effectiveness against acne. The secret behind its effectiveness is that it is good as an exfoliant as it is effective at removing dead skin cells. Dead skin cells that accumulate on your skin could clog up your pores, which could, then, lead to an acne breakout. And because it is a good exfoliant, it is more effective at removing these dead skin cells than just washing your face regularly.
Using Salicylic Acid on Your Skin
Salicylic comes in a variety of forms, such as pads, gels and lotions. When choosing a treatment, choose only one way of applying salicylic on your skin. Meaning if you choose to use a gel, use it only and not along with a lotion or a pad, because it could cause side effects.
Apply salicylic throughout the surface of your skin and not only on the affected areas to make the treatment more effective.
As with another popular acne treatment—benzoyl peroxide—salicylic acid comes in different strength levels. If you’re unsure of the strength level that’s right for you, choose the weaker solutions first, then, work your way up until you find the most effective one. Don’t apply a strong solution outright to avoid complications.
Side Effects of Salicylic Acid
As with other acids, a strong salicylic solution could cause a burning sensation on your skin. That’s why we advise that you start with weaker solutions first. This acne solution could also cause dryness on your skin, so it’s also best to apply moisturizer on your skin after.
So, there you have it, practically everything you need to know about salicylic acid. Once again, care must be taken when you’re using it as it could cause side effects such as peeling and dryness of your skin. If you experience any of these side effects, be sure to consult with your dermatologist right away for the appropriate solution.
