One of the fastest ways to get connected to people nowadays is through social networking tools and services. These social networking sites have also become a tool for internet marketing. Twitter is one of them. Twitter is an online site used for posting quick updates about anybody – their location, emotions, opinion, and yes, promotion of anything under the sun. As their tagline goes, "discover what’s happening right now, anywhere in the world". That being said, it is a good way to grow your market exponentially as you get to target around the globe.

Success in using Twitter as an internet marketing strategy has not been measured as of yet, although it has proven to have worked for some businesses. In any kind of strategy, you would have to know how it works and how it can help you. Here are some basic guidelines in using Twitter.

Refrain from pretending to be someone else. More importantly, don’t be someone you are not. Remember that since not everyone who follows you is someone you personally know, it pays to be yourself and send messages as you would in an ordinary conversation.

Refrain from tweeting "trash" or senseless information. Make your tweets entertaining and informative. Tweet regularly. This doesn’t mean you have to tweet each and every minute. Tweet when there’s something interesting or pertinent to your followers. This will create the "memory recall". Make sure to be remembered for something ‘meaningful’.

Take time to get to know your followers. You do not necessarily have to tweet each and every one of them. You just simply need to know who they are, what they do, what they like – basic things that could help you in positioning how you will market your product or service. Tweeting is a tempting site, but as much as possible refrain from "SELLING". Sending messages which are obviously sales talk could turn off your followers and eventually un-follow you. Keeping them interested is the name of the game.

Be nice and courteous. Never offend anyone. While the rule is to express your honest emotions, maintain the level of respect to any of your followers even when you do not personally know them. Remember, respect begets respect. Plan the time you will spend on Twitter. It is true that this could be addictive but as a businessman/woman, you would need to focus also on other internet marketing strategies and other aspects of your business. If you do not have the bandwidth to do all the marketing by yourself, you can seek the assistance of a marketing agency. You can focus on one of the strategies and let them work on other means.
