Some people who may be suffering a very severe sinusitis condition would often times need a prescription medication even if there are sinusitis remedies available at home. Prescription medication requires the use of antibiotics for bacterial sinusitis, decongestants to alleviate clogged nose, antihistamines and steroids to lower the body’s allergic response and therefore reduce swelling, pain relievers to address the pressure pains, and mucolytics to help liquify the secretions. These are the most common prescription medications that are commonly prescribed by physicians to alleviate symptoms of a sinus infection.
Antibiotics are prescribed for sinus infections which are caused by bacteria; however bacterial sinusitis is the least common form of sinusitis. Virus is the most common cause of sinusitis and it does not require antibiotiv therapy. Nevertheless, for those who have been diagnosed to have bacterial sinusitis, the most common antibiotic prescribed is amoxicilline, ceflacor, and loracarbef. These groups of antibiotics are known to be the most effective in killing bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumonia, Hemophilius influenza, Moraxella catarrhalis, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes, which are the most common bacteria known to have caused sinus infections. But then again, not all sinus infections are caused by bacteria. And remember that the use of antibiotic is coupled with a number of adverse effects. The most common adverse reaction of antibiotics are diarrhea, yeast over growth in the intestine and vagina, loss of hearing and balance, and worst, it may cause kidney damage. Also antibiotics destroy both the good and bad bacteria in the intestine. Meaning the live lactobacillus, the good bacteria that is found in the intestine and the ones which aids in proper digestion, are also killed by the antibiotics. Therefore, it is advisable that a person in antibiotic therapy must have a supplement use of increased probiotics. This is important so that the damage to good bacteria in the intestine will be countered.
Another prescription drug is decongestants. Decongestants generally help relieve nasal congestion and pressure. However prolonged use of this over the counter medication can cause damage to nasal tissues. Decongestants are also known to increase blood pressure and heart rate.
If sinusitis is determined to be due to allergic reaction, then antihistamines will be the prescribed medication. Antihistamine may cause dryness of the nasal passages, bleeding, headache, blurred vision, next day drowsiness, and an upset stomach. Aside from that, regular users of antihistamines become dependent to the drug.
Pain relievers such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and aspirin depletes folic Acid, potassium, and vitamin C. These nutritional depletions can lead to defects in birth, anemia, hair loss, fatigue, muscle weakness, and weakens immune system.
The adverse reactions of the use of prescription medications to cure sinus infections presented in this article are just few of the many other possible harmful effects of prescription drugs. Therefore, appropriate caution must be taken if you choose to take these prescription medications. It is also not recommended to practice self-medicating. Before taking any prescription drugs, you must first seek advice from registered medical professional. This will protect you from any unwanted complications that may lead to life threatening conditions.
