If you are bothered by frequent sneezing and a fluffy nose from time to time, then you might be suffering from a sinus infection or commonly known as sinusitis. There are so many factors that trigger a sinus attack. There are no standard rules on how to prevent onset of a sinus infection but there are a number effective ways that you can follow to help prevent onset of a sinusitis attack. But before employing any form of treatment you should first do a thorough assessment to identify what specific factors are causing your sinus attacks and triggers your sinuses to produce excessive mucous.
There are people who gets stuffy nose right after swimming. This a common condition which is called swimmers sinusitis. This type of sinusitis is caused by the flushed water in your nasal passages. If you are starting to develop annoying symptoms remember to increase your fluid intake right away. It is important to drink plenty of water in order to liquefy the mucous secretion to promote proper drainage. Some people may also find relief from nasal sprays. Using eucalyptus or olbas oil in boiling water is also a proven remedy for swimmer’s sinusitis. However if these home remedies do not work, then you must consult a medical professional immediately.
There are also individuals whose sinus attacks are triggered by onset of simple colds. If you are among these individuals, then it is important to keep yourself at your best condition at all times. Have adequate rest and sleep to boost your immune system. Sometimes it may be difficult to differentiate sinusitis from common colds. To help you with this, take note of the duration of your illness. Common colds would normally last for days until a week. But if your sneezing and runny nose continues for several weeks, or even months, then consider yourself as a sinus sufferer. Before finding solution to your sinus problem, it is important to first identify the root cause of your sinus infection. You might be allergic to dusts, pollens, and fungus. If so, then you must keep your home free from these causative factors. Keep a clean environment at all times. It is also essential to keep your environment moist because dry air can irritate the nasal mucosa. Keep yourself well hydrated and eat a healthy meal at all times specifically those food which has high content of vitamins A and C.
Signs and symptoms of sinus infection will vary from person to person so as its treatment and medication. Therefore it will be wise to have your sinuses assessed first by a sinusitis specialist before taking any prescription medication such as decongestants and nasal sprays. Self medication may just aggravate the situation. Better yet, use traditional home remedies as they are no known side effects for herbal medications.
