There are many differences between Bjj Kimonos. Sort of like T-shirts where even a simple T-shirt has many different types. Some differences in your Bjj Kimonos may be small whereas others could be a deciding factor if you would buy that Bjj Gi or not. In this article we are going to explain to you some common things that differentiate some Bjj Kimonos from the others.
Weave – The weave is typically the term used for the type of fabric used to create your Bjj Kimonos. The most common types you may hear are the single, double and gold weave Jiu Jitsu Gis. One weave is not better than another which makes it all personal preference. A few other terms for fabrics are pearl, hybrid and honey comb weave.
Weight – Weight of your Bjj Kimonos also play a big factor in determining which Gi to buy. Traditionally, Jiu Jitsu Gis were made pretty heavy weighing about 6 or 7 pounds. However, the new trend of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Grapplers are turning more toward the lighter Gis. Now a days people say the lighter the Gi the better. Well ultra light Gis may feel great but may also run the risk of tearing quick so if you were looking for a light Bjj Gi your best bet would be a Pearl Weave Gi. They are light yet very durable.
Patches – The patches that come on your Gi are typically the logo design used by the manufacturer to brand themselves on their Gis. The patches usually come in the same spots on your Kimonos. However, some brands don’t’ even have patches anymore and instead use embroidery to brand their company on their Gis.
Pants – Gi pants also play a big factor in your whole Jiu Jitsu Gi. Generally there are three different types of Gi pants which are made of canvas, drill cloth or rip stop material. Drill cloth material are the most common and traditional whereas now a new modern trend of the rip stop gi pants is coming out. The rip stop gi pants actually stop the ripping of your pants which makes it beneficial to many bjj grapplers to not have to go through many gi pants.
Color – The traditional colors of your Bjj Kimonos are white, blue and seldom times black. These 3 colors are the only allowable colors for your Jiu Jitsu Gi during competition and at most Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy’s. If you would like to know if you could train in a different color Gi besides the traditional colors in your school you must ask your instructor.
