Russian has always been good when it comes to business in their own country, but never really excelled as a whole in other countries. In particular, most Russian countries that entertain the idea of penetrating European markets tend to disregard the idea fairly quickly.

The tastes of Russians obviously differ from that of European customers. This is not just down to the likes of food and fluids, this also relates to services and physical products. The appearance and performance of products in certain country, and how it relates to them in price is extremely important. A product that comes across as cheap in one country may look extremely expensive in another country.

There are plenty of companies that have managed to be successful in Europe in a range of industries. The reality is that they are the minority of companies that have tried and succeeded.

That being said, the same goes for Europe. The culture and lifestyle of people and the quality of businesses in different countries and even different parts of countries varies a lot, which makes trading extremely hard.

As a business, the Russian Communications Company has done extremely well to develop some very stable partnerships. The likes of ABN Amro, EBRD, HSBC, JP Morgan, Royal Bank of Scotland and the Scottish Financial Enterprise are just a few of their financial customers that are extremely happy with their services.

The thing about a lot of Russian businesses, is that they come here expecting to transfer their current business knowledge and services, straight into the European market. The reality is that it needs to be adapted. It is apparent that The Russian Communications Company has managed to adapt, as they also have industrial customers such as British Gas, Cairn Energy Plc, Hewlett Packard, Intel, Nokia and Vosper Thornycroft.

One thing that Russian Businesses need to be aware of is the type of technology that is being used in different parts of Europe. It might be that a certain piece of technology will help them to develop new products or services, or maybe just set them apart from the rest. Generally though, technology will just allow businesses to compete with their competitors and without it, their competitors are one step ahead.

For businesses making the transition from Russia to the UK, they do have a few options. The best is to speak to the Russo-British Chamber of Commerce. They have been running since 1916 and make the link between Russian businesses and the UK market.

This Chamber of Commerce is a not for profit organization which offers any business the opportunity to look at market entry points, opportunities to start up and future growth as well as plenty of standard business advice.

In the past the Chamber of Commerce has made hundreds of business have an entry point to the market. Not only this, but they have enabled these businesses to stay afloat in times of hardship.
