Heavy load lifting has always played a vital role in any transporting operation in Australia. The need for a mechanism which is both fast and efficient and also provides safety during the operation has always been present in people working in the industry of transportation. Fortunately, transport cranes have been invented a long time ago and even today they still prove to completely accomplish this need. In this article we are going to discuss the importance of transport cranes as well as the more common types of cranes which are used in today’s transport operations.

Cranes are used every day to lift effortlessly heavy loads, saving a lot of time and effort. The big problem is the need for qualified personnel with knowledge in operating such machinery since many accidents happened around crane lifting because of improper operation. Transport cranes have seen much development in Australia and its leading cities such as Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney or Perth.

Most cranes fall in two categories: stationary and portable. Since there are so many types of cranes taking all sizes and shapes, we are only going to feature some of the most commonly used cranes in the transportation industry.

The most commonly used portable crane is the truck mounted crane also called the portable pick-up truck crane. The truck features a standard crane which can carry loads ranging from 15 tons to even 1000 tons, accomplishing the need for lifting most types of cargo. The mobility of the truck gives them a great advantage, not requiring any external equipment in order to transport the cargo from a location to another being able to transport it by itself on the road. They move rather slow when transporting heavy weight cargo but it is a great improvement over the stationary cranes.

There are also variations to the stationary gantry crane, allowing it to travel along the train tracks. They come in several versions, some of them travelling on a single beam, known as mono girder, others travelling on two beams, known as twin girders. Providing the lifting of very heavy loads and varying in size, the portable gantry crane is a very flexible system used in Australia and worldwide for heavy load transportation. Also, since train transportation is much safer than road transportation, the portable gantry crane system is preferred by many companies needing heavy loads lifted to their destination.

Fixed cranes have sacrificed their extended mobility for the ability to carry heavier loads and being able to reach greater heights. The tower crane is one of the most used fixed crane models. They are primary used in construction since they offer great lifting capabilities, being able to reach impressive heights. Operating a tower crane requires highly trained personnel both on the crane and on ground since in order to load or unload goods the crane operator needs to work with the help of a signaler on the ground.

If you have the required experience you can also become a crane operator in Australia. Cranes are indispensible in any transport operation being able to lift heavy goods effortlessly, no matter the weight, at impressive heights.
