This is an often seen scenario that appears for many webmasters daily. You’ve recently found a niche that works. You’re monetizing it cleverly, you’ve vaguely become an expert, and someone else comes along stealing your idea. It is one of the eternal issues plaguing Internet marketing. Finding a way to edge out your competition is always the challenge facing people selling a similar product.
What is your best way to head into the market headstrong to get the most out of it while you can? What should you be looking for to sprint ahead and make other people start looking for a different niche? The answer is not necessarily simple, but can be found in three areas: research, analytics, and evolution. Thinking on your feet is certainly a skill, but having as much information as you can will make that prowess that much easier.
Research
Research in a niche market can be as analytical or subjective as you’d like. Although, your aim should be to eventually find a happy medium when measuring yourself against competitors. Simple and free web tools such as seo toolbars, traffic measuring sites such as Compete.com, and backlink analyzers will help you discover where they are achieving their most success. Keep a regular eye on the quality of their content and be honest when critiquing. If the content is a must see, then you’ll realize that simply adding hundreds of backlinks won’t necessarily drag away their audience. Be realistic in your research and don’t just dig into your competitors, but also yourself.
Analytics
One of your trustiest weapons in the web marketing war is on site analytics. I often stress this in many of my articles and find invaluable advice from the numbers. It isn’t uncommon for people getting started in the web world to become anxious about reading graphs or percentages. Yet once you’ve found out what all of it means, your eyes will be open to understanding what your visitors actually want. One of the top areas to spend time is "top content". Seeing exactly what articles or posts were shared between friends and across the Internet can be a valuable insight but also a welcome ego boost.
Evolution
It’s important to realize when an idea just isn’t working anymore. It may be time to add a little something to your content or it may be time to jump ship and let the rest of the competition eat themselves. The greatest successes in the Internet industry never exist alone for long. You’ve seen the trends over the last few years. Sure, there are top dogs in each category but other times it might be easier to create an entirely new niche instead of competing for the crown in a sea of competition.
A successful person does not always win. They are successful because they’ve learned when to call it quits or change direction if there is just no sense to continue on a certain path. Yes, there is something to be said for a person who never quits, but there is also something to consider when discussing a person who knew to step back and refocus.
