In this condition, a person shows different identities of himself and each of these identities is different in its own perception and in its interaction with the environment. It is also called multiple personality disorder. This is quite a rare type of disorder when compared to others. It involves the presence of at least two personalities in a single individual, with a certain amount of memory loss, which is much more than the usual forgetfulness.
Childhood trauma seems to be one of the main causes when it comes to DID or dissociative identity disorder. Certain people who have undergone physical or sexual abuse during childhood have been reported to develop this rare psychiatric disorder. Other causes for DID include overwhelming stress, nutritional deficiencies during childhood, the occurrence of some traumatic incidents in life and a special capability to dissociate experiences and memories from consciousness.
The symptoms of Dissociative Identity Disorder include severe memory loss, body pain associated with unexplainable headaches, depression, sudden unexplained anger, occasional panic attacks, paranoia, unexplainable phobias, De-realization, depersonalization, comorbidity, distortion, multiple beliefs, attitudes and mannerisms that are completely different, sudden flashbacks of trauma/abuse and Auditory of the different personalities that reside in their minds. There are also instances where the patients have refused to recognize themselves in the mirror.
If left untreated, people having DID may become addicted to alcohol or drugs, they can lose their jobs, their quality of life may decrease, they can show some violent behavior, or they can even commit suicide. Therefore, patients with Dissociative identity Disorder are usually given therapies such as psychotherapy, behavior therapy, hypnosis and sometimes, medications in case they also suffer from anxiety or depression. Certain severe cases are even advised electroconvulsive therapies.
