Many people may have heard of BiPAP machines and are curious to learn more about them. BiPAP is an acronym. The "Bi" part of the name stands for bi-level, and the PAP part stands for positive airway pressure. It is a kind of machine designed specifically to help people breathe during sleep.
There are many different breathing conditions that may require the assistance of this machine. The most common of these conditions is sleep apnea. This is a serious disease that occurs when the upper airway of a person collapses during sleep.
This can cause a person to stop breathing numerous times during the night. When this occurs, the person usually wakes up with a load snore. The lack of quality sleep this condition causes can have serious consequences. It can lead to depression, serious mental conditions, and the over all deterioration of a person’s health.
Originally, a separate technology known as CPAP was used to combat this health problem. CPAP masks work by creating pressure on a person’s airways by blowing air. This forces those airways to remain open so a person can breathe while sleeping.
This, however, can create a problem. To breathe with a CPAP mask, a person has to exert effort to exhale against the pressure the machine creates. This can become a serious problem for people who have trouble exhaling naturally due to diseases that affect the strength of the muscles used in breathing.
BiPAP masks were developed as a way to solve this problem. This problem was addressed by technology that was developed to allow a BiPAP mask to blow air at one pressure setting for inhaling and a completely different pressure setting for exhaling. This allows a person to breathe freely during sleep without the need to use muscles to exhale against the machine’s pressure.
This is especially beneficial to those who have neuromuscular diseases or similar disorders that affect the performance of muscles in the breathing tract. It can also help those who suffer from congestive heart failure, lung cancer, and atelectasis. Atelectasis is a condition in which a significant portion of a lung collapses. This collapse can make breathing very difficult due to the inability of air sacs in the lungs to expand.
BiPAP machines should be covered by most forms of health insurance including Medicare. Without health insurance, purchasing a BiPAP mask can be expensive. However, many medical equipment companies provide plans that allow people to rent these machines at a reduced rate.
If a person believes he or she may benefit from the use of a BiPAP machine, that person should consult a doctor. There are certain tests that can be performed to determine whether or not a person would benefit from sleeping with such a device.
