Abdominoplasty Procedure Recovery Steps

Abdominoplasty which is more commonly known as a tummy tuck is a cosmetic procedure which removes excess skin and fat from the abdominal region.
The abdominal region is a problem area for many people regardless of what shape they are in. The abdominoplasty procedure can restore weakened muscles to create the appearance of a tighter and smoother tummy. Whether there is excess skin from a previous weight loss, a larger midsection due to a previous pregnancy, normal signs of aging or just having a genetically larger "pooch area," a tummy tuck may be the best choice.
Abdominoplasty is not a substitute for a healthy diet and exercise. Patients may not qualify for the procedure if they are not at a healthy and steady weight. Other lifestyle factors such as not smoking and mental health may also be evaluated. To decide if someone is a candidate for the surgery, the doctor will analyze the medical history of the patient as well as any plans for future pregnancies or weight loss which can affect results.
Depending on the size of the area and extent of the surgery, a tummy tuck can take anywhere from one to five hours. A complete abdominoplasty will take longer whereas for someone with only minor problem areas, a mini abdominoplasty can be performed in less time. The plastic surgeon will evaluate the abdomen and decide what degree of surgery is necessary on an individual basis.
This surgery is invasive and an incision will need to be made from the hip to the navel. The surgeon will tighten the abdominal muscles with sutures and removing any excess skin.
The length of recovery will be dependent on the extent of the surgery. The recovery period can take anywhere from one to four weeks with the earlier portion to be spent in bed. There may be some initial bruising and discomfort which can be alleviated with an abdominal binder. Within four weeks, the patient’s plastic surgeon may allow them to return to regular activity, but a full recovery can take up to six months and by then scars will have faded.
As with all surgeries, abdominoplasty does not come without risks. A good doctor will inform the patient prior to the surgery of all the risks associated with the surgery and may even help the patient weight the risks and the benefits of the surgery to come to a well-educated decision. As long as the patient follows the care and recovery instructions given by the plastic surgeon, most of the risks can likely be avoided. Some complications include thrombosis, infections and blood clots. To avoid blood clots, patients are advised to move around after surgery. Very rarely, pulmonary embolism, heart attack or stroke may occur.
