Indeed, doctors are probably some of the world's highest-paid professionals. Moreover, they never run out of jobs. They can work in hospitals, caregiving centers, and clinics. They can even set up their own medical practice if they don't want to.
But being a doctor requires a lot of things-it's not the easiest type of work. A good doctor should have the following attributes:
Ability to be there whenever needed
Though physicians take holidays-and they usually do them with style-they are almost always on call. This means they should be at health care facilities where they are assigned anytime they are needed. If they're on the road, it's their duty to have their mobile phones active, just in case their replacement doctors would need more information from them.
It's not surprising to know physicians leaving homes in the middle of the night or sleeping just for two hours a day.
Precision
Many people would joke about doctors' handwriting, but the truth is they have the steadiest hands. It is actually important they have one. Otherwise, it would be impossible for them to achieve a very successful surgery.
A steady hand, though, is not the only thing they need. They also have to be precise or accurate in their diagnosis and treatment. One of the most common causes of medical malpractice is omission, misinformation, and misdiagnosis. This means doctors should conduct comprehensive and appropriate tests before they come up with their diagnosis and provide treatments and cure.
Technological Advancement
The health care industry is growing not just because of the discovery of new medicines but also of the launching of several handy tools that make physicians' work so much easier. For example, they can now use the hospital software called the hybrid chart. The main use of this is to help them in their rounding roles.
With the hospital rounding software, they are able to schedule their patients' visit properly, allowing them to see as many of their patients as possible every day. They can also sort them out in terms of their health care facilities. Rounding hospital software can also be integrated to EMRs. This way, the physicians-and even their nurses-can access patient information electronically. It's also now a growing trend for these applications to be accessible in mobile phones.
Selfless Service
The doctor may be the smartest and the most knowledgeable in the field, but if he doesn't have compassion and love of service he isn't really the best. In fact, he may turn out to be the worst doctor there is.
Patients rely on their physicians not just for healing but for their life. Moreover, in times of desperation and loss of hope, they want their doctors not just to offer guarantees but also consolation and comfort. Physicians need to be in touch with their humanity.
Persistence
Doctors need more than 4 years of school in order to be employed. Usually, they spend 8 years or more, depending on the regulations of the country. They also have to participate in a residency program. Being out of school and into hospitals doesn't also mean they should stop learning. In fact, it is an ongoing process. Doctors have to remain knowledgeable to the changes in medical science.
A lot of physicians have to spend their own money so they can take refresher course, enrol in a specialization, or participate in seminars and conferences. Some extend their working hours so they can get themselves involved in researches.
You see, being a doctor is not a joke. The responsibility and stakes are high. Unless you're willing to develop all these attributes, you may be not cut out for it.
