Divorce can be very expensive. The good news is that there are a lot of ways to save money on divorce. As you are probably aware, there are thousands of articles on the web which purport to give you advice about how to save money on divorce. The most common advice that you will encounter is 'do not hire an attorney'.
The advice 'do not hire an attorney' sounds good on the surface, but in reality, it is often impractical. Most divorces that are filed in the United States are contested. The husband and the wife do not get a long and they do not want to speak to one another. That being said, this article is geared towards helping you save money on divorce once you have hired an attorney.
A lot of people do not know this, but even if you have hired an attorney, there are still a lot of small things that you can do on your part to save money by helping the attorney move your divorce forward. Remember, attorney time costs money...less attorney time equals more money in your pocket.
Tip #1 - Communicate With Your Spouse. By the end of the marriage, most spouses cannot stand the sight of each other. If this is you, then you and your spouse probably do not have an open channel of communication between you. Having this breakdown in communication means that you and your spouse will have to communicate with each other through the use of the attorneys. Go ahead and open a channel of communication between you and your spouse and explain to your spouse that your goal in doing so is to keep the attorneys out of the process as much as possible.
Tip #2 - Try To Avoid Discussing Petty Things When Talking With The Attorney. Again, just like we stated above, attorney time is money. Whenever you are discussing the status of your case with the attorney, whether the discussion is face-to-face, over the phone, or through email, try to avoid wasting the attorney's time by only discussing matters which are relevant to moving your divorce forward.
Tip #3 - Be Prepared Before Meeting With The Attorney. Tip number three kind of ties in with tip number two. The goal with both numbers two and three is to not waste any of the attorney's time. By being prepared and knowing ahead of time what matters you want to discuss with the attorney, you will avoid wasting the attorney's time and will save a lot of money.
Tip #4 - Gather Documents And Information For The Attorney. During the divorce process, the attorney and the judge will require that you produce a lot of documents. These documents include but are not limited to: tax returns for the past three years, current pay stubs, and proof of child care expenses. If you expect the attorney to do most of the leg work for you, then you can also expect that the attorney will ultimately bill you thousands of dollars for the services. Take our advice and do most of the legwork yourself.
Tip #5 - Try To Settle The Divorce Outside Of Court. The quicker you and spouse settle the divorce, the quicker you can get rid of the attorney. Throughout the divorce process, make sure that your spouse is aware of the fact that you want to settle outside of court and also make sure that you do everything in your power to facilitate that settlement.
