  1. Insufficient RAM- RAM or main memory of your system is the component where all the applications and system software get loaded when you execute them. If a RAM is not sufficient enough to load any of the application into the memory it won’t run. There are many huge applications that exceed your RAM’s total capacity and which reduce down the overall performance of your PC.

Add more memory. While this is definitely an option that costs money, it is by far the best thing you can do to increase computer hardware performance for nominal cost. Adding RAM is the best resolution you can do when it comes to improving hardware.

  1. Increase Virtual memory- Virtual Memory is simply the operating system using some amount of disk space as if it were real memory.

The area of the hard disk that stores the RAM image is called a page file. It holds pages of RAM on the hard disk, and the operating system exchange data back and forth between the pagefile and RAM. So where your RAM is not sufficient enough to run the huge applications your operating system uses hard drive space to load these heavy applications. The size of virtual memory should be greater than (usually 1.5 times of RAM) your main memory always.

Method how to change Virtual memory (Example Windows Vista)

  1. Click on Start and go to the Click Control Panel

  2. Select System and Maintenance and then click System.

  3. In the left pane, Select Advanced system settings.

  4. In the Advanced tab, under Performance, click on Settings.

  5. Click the Advanced tab, under Virtual memory, choose Change.

  6. Click Custom to change the Initial size (MB) and Maximum size.

  7. The OS and Processor- The operating system is the soul of your system. It also plays the most important role in overall performance of your machine. With the different versions of Windows the speed and performance is also dissimilar. For an example if you are using windows vista now whereas it was using Windows XP on the same machine before, in this case you might feel some speed degradation or variations. This is just because of the operating system and its hardware requirement specification.

On the other hand a process is the component which runs or processes all the system and application software in your machine. If your processor is not meeting the requirement for the applications you are running, the overall performance of your machine will affect significantly. Thus make sure you are using the latest and efficient processor to run all the applications in your system.

  1. The maintenance of the PC- The performance of your PC can also be down in absence of proper maintenance tasks. Windows provides many built in tools, utilities and PC tune-up features that are required to be run in a regular interval. Some of the major utilities and tools are- Disk Cleanup, Disk check, sfc /scannow, defragmentation. These utilities are necessary essential to run for every Windows system.

  2. Number of software and programs installed in it- This is one of the most common causes behind making a PC slow. If you are using lots of heavy applications even they are not using by you now, they can slow down your PC’s performance. You may remove some of the unneeded software programs from your system. This removal releases some system resources (RAM, CPU usage, hard drive space) and it adds some speed to your system performance definitely.

  3. Any infection in PC- Any kind of infection is the most dangerous threat for your PC and its performance. Unless you know how to avoid and fight with it, you probably have it on your computer. If you do know about it and scan for it, if you haven't scanned in a while, you probably have something new on your PC. A PC has something that fits this category running on the PC, eating up system resources, or worse yet, spying on your sensitive data or your activity (they are called spyware), and collecting data from you.

Official resolution for this problem is to use an up to date antivirus and antispyware program to protect your PC and data.

  1. Corrupted Windows registry-

The Windows Registry is the master control center for your operating system, all the hardware components and applications it runs. Damage or overload registry issues can cause different sorts of pc performance problems, including poor application startup times, slow Windows start-up, extremely slow shut down, failure to resume from computer sleep and more.

Cleaning, repairing, and optimizing your Windows registry can go a long way to dramatically speeding up your computer’s performance, start-up and shutdown speed. We recommend using a good registry cleaner program instead of making any manual alteration in your registry.

  1. And the most importantly the overall performance of your PC depends upon the person who uses it.
