Traumatic brain injuries can be caused by a car accident, motorcycle accident, truck wreck, or even a bicycle accident, and others. Victims of traumatic brain injuries can live his or her life with physical and emotional pain, and can cost a lot of money for lifetime rehabilitation; it can also cost a person’s ability to earn income. At the very most, TBIs can also lead to fatalities.
Of all these causes, a significant cause of is motorcycle accidents. 20% of motorcycle accidents lead to head or neck injuries, which eventually causes deaths. In contrast to cars accidents, the probability of motorcycle accidents is higher; car drivers do not see the motorcyclists and do not give them the right of way. In 2003, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that for every mile traveled, the probability of a motorcycle accident occurring is 32 times greater than a car accident.
Wear Helmets and Proper Gear
Motorcyclists who drive without helmets are more exposed to incurring brain injury in cases of motorcycle injuries, as it is more possible for a foreign object to hit or enter the skull, which as a result, damages the brain tissues. The national Department of Transportation and some states have a list of safety-approved helmets. Wearing a helmet that do not meet their standards, is badly fitted, or worn out, may not be sufficient in preventing severe damages in cases of accidents. Although there are a few states that do not have law for the motorcyclists to wear helmet, wearing a helmet is still encouraged, because it can lead to severe brain injuries and fatalities.
Other protective gear that are recommended for motorcycle drivers are boots and gloves. There are boots that are particularly designed for motorcycle drivers to avoid accidents. Gloves are also specifically designed for motorcyclists to tighten their grip on the steering handle.
Other Conditions
Like operating any vehicle, owners and drivers of motorcycles should always check the condition of their transportation. Check the brake, clutch, suspension, and headlights regularly, and if possible, prior to riding. Weather conditions can also be a factor in motorcycle accidents, such as slippery roads, heavy rains, snow storm, and others.
