Now that you have really decided to really stop smoking, you need to find out how the most popular quit smoking products work. First let's look at what causes cigarettes to get people addicted to smoking. The nicotine in cigarettes is what causes addiction. It is a chemical that takes over the regulation of the body's production of serotonin, endorphins and dopamine. These are the feel good chemicals that the body produces naturally. When a person starts smoking, nicotine takes over the regulation of the production of these chemicals, so the body stops producing them naturally.
So, when a person wants to quit smoking, their body doesn't start producing these feel good chemicals immediately because it has been used to the nicotine triggering the production for so long. It may take several weeks for the body to get with it again as far as triggering the production of these things. During this time a person will experience major discomfort because they are without these chemicals. The popular quit smoking products on the market help a person get through this time frame.
Nicotine patches are used to make the withdrawal from nicotine a gradual process so that the body will hopefully begin working to trigger the production of the chemicals before the nicotine is completely gone from the system. The initial patch may release a high level of nicotine into the body. Over time, the patches used have a lower and lower level of nicotine, coaxing the body to start working properly in this area again. Eventually, when the nicotine patch is no longer delivering any nicotine, the body is triggering the correct level of chemical production.
Other quit smoking products try to induce the body to start producing these feel good chemicals immediately when the nicotine is stopped. Acupuncture is one method that is used to do this. Whether traditional acupuncture is used or laser acupuncture, the goal is to stimulate energy centers in the body that will start working to help the body naturally produce endorphins, serotonin and dopamine. This will prevent the major withdrawal symptoms that some people have when they quit smoking.
Another method for quitting smoking is to get a prescription medication from your physician that can help your body produce the chemicals needed while you stop smoking. The only thing to remember with this is that you will have to eventually wean yourself off of the medication also.
