Search Engine Optimization: Search Industry Terms Cp-Ht we went over a number of terms relative to the search engine marketing and internet marketing industries. The terms included CPC or Cost Per Click advertising, Domain Age and Domain Names, File Transfer Protocol or FTP and HTML or Hypertext Markup Language. Understanding search industry terms is critical for any business owner trying to dominate the search traffic in their market. In this installment we'll further that goal by discussing several more terms related to the industry: Hyperlinks and Hypertext, search engine indexation, keyword and keyphrase densities and link juice.
Hyperlinks, Hypertext
Hyperlinks are the clickable links that take website visitors from one piece of information to the next. Ideally hyperlinks should be live, clickable links that either take the user to the referenced page using another browser window, or from within the same window.
Hyperlinks can also be straight links, meaning that clicking on them will not activate any type of navigation. In these cases straight hyperlinks will need to be copied and pasted into a browser or typed in manually.
In many cases a hyperlink is contained within a certain body of text - meaning that instead of clicking on what appears to be a full URL links, a user can simply click on text that is referencing the meaning or association of the linked-to information. Text within the link is called hypertext, and links that are built entirely in text are called anchor text links.
Anchor text links help to tell both search engine bots and human visitors what the referenced material is all about. If the material on the referenced page is similar to the source page, then the link is said to be contextually relevant. Contextually relevant anchor text links from sites that have authority in your industry or niche are the most valuable types of backlinks that you can obtain for your website. They are also the most difficult to obtain.
Indexation
Indexation refers to search bots or spiders from search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing going out and finding and cataloging your links and content. If your links and content are not indexed, then technically they don't exist from an organic search standpoint, in which case only those people with direct looks could ever find that content. This means that getting your pages and content indexed is one of the most crucial parts of a successful internet marketing strategy.
Keyword / Keyphrase Density
Keyword density refers to the percentage of times your primary keywords appear in a given body of text. Too many times and you could be penalized, too few and your page might never be found. A good strategy is to keep your keyword density below 4%, or approximately one mention per 100 words. For a more comprehensive strategy, consult with a professional SEO/SEM expert.
"Link Juice"
Link Juice, also referred to as Link Love, refers to the value given by the source site of a backlink pointing to your webpage. The more authoritative and relevant the source site is, the more that particular link is worth. As an example, sites with the .edu or .gov extension are widely believed to provide more link weight than a traditional link - provided the source site is relevant to your page. However, it should be noted that high-authority websites with commercial extensions can be just as valuable or even more so. The key is in the hyperlink, the anchor text and the contextual relevance.
