Not knowing what to expect when you're considering getting help for a drug or alcohol problem can be the most significant obstacle to an addict or alcoholic reaching out for and getting the right treatment at the right time. And with the inaccurate portrayals of drug rehab centers in the media on programs like Celebrity Rehab and others, some addicts might not reach out for help at all based on what they've seen. However, knowing what questions to ask when you speak to an intake specialist at a drug addiction rehabilitation facility can make the difference between going into treatment blindly and empowering yourself with value information in order to make the decision that is best for you.
Question #1: How long does treatment last?
There is no real answer to this question because treatment is different for everyone. Each person's treatment plan is highly individualized and will include different therapies of differing durations. Additionally, not every person will complete their treatment plan on time. Therefore, some longer rehab programs like residential inpatient treatment programs can last anywhere from 30 to 60 and when necessary even 90 days. Outpatient and Day/Night treatment programs are far less intense but could also last for 90 days or even longer in some cases.
Question #2: What type of treatment is it?
The type of treatment you need depends on your drug or alcohol problem, how severe it is, how long it has been going on and if you've ever been treated for addiction before. The types of treatment available are:
*Inpatient Treatment: patients live in the same facility where they receive treatment
*Partial Hospitalization or PHP (Also known as Day/Night Treatment Programs): patients attend intensive therapies during the day and retire in the evenings to supervised clean and sober living environments
*Outpatient: patients attend therapies during the day and go to their homes or other living situations in the evening
Question #3: How do I pay?
Employer-sponsored insurance programs usually pay for treatment, as do personal medical insurance policies. Some state and federal insurance programs will pay for rehab as well. Conversely, you can pay out of pocket for treatment and likely receive a discount. You can also get a loan or use a credit card. Additionally, governmental and state welfare programs may be available to help pay for treatment. In some cases you may be able to obtain a scholarship from the clinic itself, or from a local civic or charitable organization.
Question #4: What types of therapies are used?
The most common types of therapies used to treat drug addiction and alcoholism include:
*Evidence based practices
*Reality therapy
*Cognitive behavioral therapy
*Psychotherapy
*Individual therapy
*Group therapy
*Family therapy
*Biofeedback
