What is it that makes a good business leader? Studies have been carried out but have not all come to the same conclusions. This is because some leaders have certain characteristics while others have differing ones or some that overlap with others. Some leaders are very extrovert, while others are not, but yet are still successful.
If it was easy to be a successful leader then everyone could do it, but that is not the case. Some people are naturally introvert, some really don't want to be a leader. They just want to go to work, do their job, and go home again. They really have no ambition or desire to be promoted and to lead others. Others may have a burning desire to be promoted yet are not seen to have the right qualities by management.
So what are some of the qualities of a good leader? Successful leaders are fearless. That is not to say that they have no fears. Everybody does. But they face those fears head on. They see them as a challenge, as something to be overcome. A good leader has a goal and always keeps sight of it. When an obstacle gets in the way, a leader climbs over it, goes around it, or digs a tunnel underneath it, in order to get to the other side and continue the journey toward the goal. A good leader makes things happen.
A good leader is definitely a decision maker. Successful leaders make decisions all the time. They may not always be the right decisions, but they don't "umm" and "ahh". They take a decision based on what they see as the best path for the company at that particular time. If the decision turns out to be the wrong decision, they don't dwell on the fact. They take another decision! Taking a decision and moving forward is always better than not taking a decision.
A successful leader is one who is constantly motivated to move forward and is always on the lookout for strategies to motivate the team as well. She keeps in mind the goals and drives herself forward. When this happens and the team see that the leader is motivated, it encourages them to move forward as well, hence becoming a team rather than a group of individuals.
Another trait of the successful leader is authenticity. A leader is true to the person that she is. She is inspired by what is happening around her and is genuinely interested in it. When the leader is inspired, that also inspires the team.
Successful leaders are also fair. They treat team members fairly and they are true believers in themselves and their abilities. They have a vision – the next goal – and they set themselves clear performance processes in order to make certain that they guide their team in the right direction. This makes them and their team focused on reaching the goal, rather than wasting time proving themselves. A confident leader who is sure about her ideas and goals will reach them.
A good leader also follows her passion. When you are passionate about something you will move heaven and earth to achieve the goal. Nothing will be allowed to stand in your way. You will make things happen – whatever it takes will get done.
Successful leaders also know that they can never stop learning. Life is constantly evolving, and the good leader will evolve with it. She will ensure that she is constantly doing research in order to keep up to date with everything that is happening around her and she will ensure that her team is kept up to date as well so that each team member becomes a lifelong learner as well.
Those are some of the qualities of a successful leader. There are leadership training courses available that can help to teach these skills, since not every leader is born with all of them. Some of them can be learned and acquired, and in order for senior management to ensure that the whole organisation performs at its best at all times, it is worth their while to organise such courses for their supervisors in order to improve their leadership abilities.
Supervisor Academy is a company that provides leadership training courses that develop high performance supervisors so that a company can get great results even faster.
