Climate change is somewhat of a controversial subject that is still under debate in political and scientific spheres. Insurance companies, however, would strongly argue that climate change does exist as increasingly severe weather patterns and wildfires caused by drought continue to drive consumer losses higher. Unfortunately, the travel business is a big contributor to global environmental impact as the industry is responsible for 8% of total global greenhouse gas emissions. Of that, 40% is produced by airlines that use fossil fuels in day to day operations. Consumer mindset has slowly shifted towards sustainability and environmentally positive options can influence purchasing decisions. A Statista survey from 2024 indicated that 83% of respondents felt that sustainable travel options were very important. The market outlook for sustainable travel is also very positive with forecasts topping $11.5 trillion (USD) market valuation by 2033 (Customer Market Insights). Travel businesses are turning to technology to improve sustainability initiatives both in the front and back end of the business.
Finding Sustainable Travel Options
Consumers are becoming more conscious of the environment and the subject of climate change is a major topic covered across most media avenues. Preferences could be shifting towards sustainable options and searches using the terms ‘sustainable travel’ increased 61% over the last two years (passport-photo.online). Finding eco-friendly travel products and services has become easier as many online travel agents (OTAs) have set up specific categories to showcase sustainable travel products and services. A simple Google search of sustainable travel reveals dozens of travel businesses and providers that cater to the category. OTAs in particular are investing technology resources to highlight sustainable options in their offerings, further driving popularity of the category. Airlines themselve are now publicizing carbon emissions and environmental impact alongside traditional flight information so travel consumers have all the information they need to make those eco-conscious purchasing decisions. Travel providers are also highlighting their own sustainability initiatives as a marketing tool to appeal to consumers seeking sustainable travel options.
Managing Operational Impact
The travel industry accounts for a significant portion of globally produced greenhouse gases and at the core of the industry is transportation which is a major contributor to those environmental impacts through the burning of fossil fuels. The resource heavy facet of the travel industry is quick to adopt technology that can manage and control costs and as a result, reduce negative environmental impacts. Recent advances in AI and machine learning have created opportunities for travel providers to improve efficiencies, manage resource consumption and reduce carbon output. Using AI models, airlines and other transportation providers can maximize fleet and resource usage by optimizing and forward predicting passenger needs and scheduling. The vast processing power of AI systems can identify opportunities to control and reduce overhead and resource consumption, saving time and money while reducing carbon output and environmental impact.
Sustainability Efforts at the Facility Level
Transportation within the travel industry is a major cause of greenhouse emissions but travel facilities and accommodations are also significant contributors to climate change. Hotels, resorts, transport hubs and other travel facilities consume resources and create waste which has negative impacts to the environment but with the use of advanced management technology, effective sustainable initiatives are possible. Automation technology is widely used to control and manage environmental functions, potentially reducing energy consumption to power amenities such as air conditioners, hot water tanks and pool heaters. Inventory management technology can reduce waste by optimizing food service and consumable ordering based on predicted needs.. Transportation facilities, such as airports, are pushing towards document free travel which can help sustainability efforts by reducing paper waste as well as minimizing passenger time at the facility, reducing consumption needs.
Awareness Shifts Travel Consumer Preferences
While the subject of climate change may invoke stringent debate and conspiracy theories, there is no doubt which side of the argument insurance companies are on. Increasing losses in commercial and residential property caused by severe weather and wildfires can be traced back to changes in atmospheric makeup that drive the severity and frequency of major weather events. The travel industry is a major factor in the production of climate changing greenhouse gases and traveling consumers have started to take notice of their own individual impact on the environment. Searches for sustainable travel options continue to ramp up as travel consumers actively seek out eco-conscious products and services. To meet the need, travel businesses are adopting the latest operational technologies to improve their own sustainability efforts as well as building awareness of eco-friendly products and services at the consumer level.
