Most recent survey of nearly 30,000 people revealed that the pressure to look good is rising in America and men and women are particularly concerned about the look of their hair.
This is confirmed by the fact that hair care is one the biggest personal care categories in terms of money spent.
Here are expert tips for proper hair care, including how to prevent hair damage and ways to maintain healthy hair as we age.
The number one tip is to do as little as possible to your hair. When it comes to hair care, less is more. Hair can easily be damaged by using too much styling products or subjecting the hair to repeated processes, such as coloring, perms, straightening or waving.
These things can improve the cosmetic look of the hair, but sooner or later they will certainly cause the hair to lose some of its natural sheen and give the impression of being unhealthy.
Many people do not understand that hair is dead and you cannot repair it once it is damaged. As we age, hair growth slows down and the beauty of our hair diminishes.
Hair loss in women is a serious cosmetic concern, so the secret is to stop damage by avoiding over-processing and over-grooming your hair and choosing hair care products with confirmed benefits.
The hair is at its healthiest in our 20s. Young women should avoid fad diets or yo-yo dieting because this can cause chaos on hair. Your hair needs protein, vitamins and minerals to be healthy. Hair that lacks nutrition from the foods doesn’t grow properly and it won’t hold that radiant, healthy glow.
For women in their 30s, hair health is often affected by pregnancy. During pregnancy, hair looks luxurious and radiant. However, 6 months after delivery, hair sheds. In this case, two scenarios are possible. Some of the hair will eventually re-grow. But for women who have a tendency towards female-pattern hair loss, the hair may not re-grow.
Gray hair typically begins to appear in women in their 40s. Women at this age usually turn to hair color as a way to camouflage gray hair.
Hair coloring is always damaging regardless of what color you use. If you want to lighten your hair color more than 3 shades you will need higher volumes of peroxide. As a result, the hair will be more damaged. So, if women want to cover their gray hair, they should dye their hair within three color shades of their natural color.
Additionally, women in their 40s typically go into the perimenopause period. Because estrogen levels begin to drop, women may experience thinning hair and notice that their hair doesn’t grow as fast.
The diameter of the hair shaft in women in their 50s and beyond continues to thin.
Because of this, women should shorten the amount of time they leave on styling products for the reason that thinner hair shafts need less time to process.
Older women should use protein-containing conditioners as well as handle their hair as little as possible.
