Routine is a necessary part of life, whether you like it or not. Routine helps to maintain stability in life in all of the ways you need it most. But what exactly is a routine? According to the Webster’s Dictionary a routine is something you do at a fixed time that involves predictability.

Routine is integral to the game of golf. One common routine for many golfers is to first begin by standing directly behind the ball, making sure that the ball is lined up perfectly with the hole. Once this is done, the golfer will then devise a plan of action for making the shot. Some people have their own unique maneuvers they do to prepare for the shot- they need to become comfortable and feel confident as they move their hips about or give their foot a shake. Then it is time to close their eyes for a second, take a deep breath and go for the gold.

If this scenario describes you on the green then keep doing what you are doing, or at least continue to do it most of the time. This is what is known as your pre-shot routine. You will find that your comfort level will increase if you are as consistent as possible. Other golfers will notice it too.

A routine helps the golfer to prepare for what he is about to do, not just on a physical level, but a mental one as well. The mind is then able to focus on the task at hand which is taking the shot, and distractions are shut out. All of the skills you have learned on the driving range should easily come back to you as you stand there focused and aware.

Not every pre-stroke routine is the same for everyone. Just make sure you see that the ball is aligned and that your mind is free of all other concerns. Perhaps you need to swing your hips or move your hands forward to feel as at ease as you can be.
