A Hotel Is Not Always The Best way To Stay.....

There's a tendency to immediately think "Hotel" when we consider spending our vacation dollars. I guess that's because we see hotels as offering the ultimate reward we want for our hard work, and a chance to really relax, perhaps in a degree of luxury.
This is of course true, however with families' resources now increasingly stretched, it's a good time to look at what other alternatives exist for your vacation. There is also the fact that hotels might not always be the right choice for a vacation and that other options will provide a better experience.
Consider Bed and Breakfasts (sometimes known as "homestays") - these are generally small, cheerful, family run places where good wholesome meals and accommodation are the rule, rather than the exception. Sometimes a plate of fresh baked brownies will arrive unexpectedly, reminding us that we can still be delighted by those extra warm little thoughtful touches in life! Be prepared to share meals (and conversation) with other guests though. You may also find it difficult to find a good match if you have kids, as rooms are considerably smaller.
Inns are also available and offer another option - larger than bed and breakfasts; they are still generally friendlier than the hotel chains.
What about Motels? Well they too have their strengths over mainstream hotels. Apart from obvious benefits such as cost - their out of town location can be a benefit too, especially if navigating your way to a downtown hotel makes you nervous. Parking is a breeze and in most cases you'll get a more than adequate vacation experience. If you're anxious about the room quality or specification, why not check it out before checking in?
Renting an apartment or condo is a good option - what you save on meals out will more than compensate for the possible additional cost. If you have kids, this is an especially good option - if only to get a little more of your own space! Condos are usually in the resort areas - here you will pay more, but for a large group it makes for a fantastic vacation option.
Still sold on the idea of a hotel? That's fine! At the top end of hotel provision, you will be pampered and have the option of using spas and other recreational facilities. However, if it's a medium to low grade hotel you're considering, why not spend an hour looking at some of the other options? It could result in one of your best vacations ever....
