Everyone thinks that they want to be an entrepreneur and thinks they need to get to that position before they can start begin thinking on their own, or thinking big. Until that point they simply believe that they need to do what they are told and eventually things will be handed to them, responsibilities will be given to them and opportunities will simply appear before them. This doesn't make sense at all. Let's say someone you worked with never fixed anything in his life and never did any work on his own car. In fact he'd never even opened the hood of a car. Would you ask him to work on your car? No, you'd go to someone you've either heard has done the work before, or you've seen him do it. This is how bosses think also. This is what the business entrepreneur's do. If you learn to do that, you will rush through corporate ladder. If you can simply learn how to think like an entrepreneur, only then will opportunities appear before you. So how do you do it?

Your first step is to realize that things will more than likely start out small. You won't be given huge accounts at work or extremely large projects to do, but that doesn't mean that you should treat them that way. Even if you are working with your smallest client, you should treat them as though they are your most important. This should be done for two reasons. The first one is people will notice that. Not only will the client notice that you are treating them better than most people, but your superiors will also. Only once you've demonstrated that you can do something well, will they offer you bigger and better things. The other thing that you will have accomplished by this is comfort and knowledge of how to handle larger things. There will be no, or at least a smaller, adjustment period when your accounts and clients get larger and larger. You've already studied and practiced all the small things that need to be done with a large project when they didn't need to be done. And now that they do need to be done, you've got a great handle on it.

Another way that you can start to think like an entrepreneur is to understand the business that you are in. You need to know and understand what is expected of not only you, but of everyone around you. This growing knowledge of how the business grows and runs will make you a perfect fit for the world of entrepreneurs. This may require you to practice you people skills a little bit because not everyone will simply walk up and tell you what their job is. In fact, most people won't say anything to you at all if you don't ask them. This needs to be done with genuine interest. You need to understand what is they do, how they are suppose to do it and what they do and don't like about it. This will teach you the inner workings of business and the corporate ladder.

Your final tip in how to think like an entrepreneur is to simply as someone who's done it. The people who have been in the shoes that you want to be in are a priceless resource. To quote the incredible Chris Gardner, simply ask them, “What do you do and how do you do it?” It may seem forward, but many times these people love to talk about how they achieved success. And almost every time there is a formula for success.
