The fish oil vitamin benefits are actually due to the omega-3 fatty acid content. Omega3s are essential to human growth, development and life. The body cannot produce them. So, they must be consumed through diet. Many people don’t get enough of them.
When researchers have looked at dietary habits of native peoples around the world, they found that some diets seemed to be healthier than others. There were fewer incidences of coronary artery disease and heart attacks. Of course, this could have been due to a lack of smoking, air pollution or larger amounts of physical activity. But, in some cases, only the diet could explain the good health.
The Mediterranean diet, the traditional Japanese diet, the Eskimo diet and the diet in Southern France were some of the ones that were identified as particularly healthy. As the years have gone by, researchers have looked at specific omega3 fatty acids, including ALA, which is found in plant oils, EPA, DPA and DHA, which are found primarily in oily fishes. In some cases the body must convert ALA to the other fats, but the process is slow and inefficient. Research has shown that ALA supplements, like flaxseed, do not increase circulating blood levels of DHA.
DHA is essential to the brain and the eyes. Low levels are associated with depression, age-related dementia and cognitive impairment. Low intake of EPA and DHA are associated with increased risk of heart disease, heart attack and stroke. So, the fish oil vitamin benefits may include decreased depression, improved cognitive ability and a reduced risk of age-related heart disease and dementia. It may also reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.
If you suffer from arthritis, joint pain or stiffness, you may see improvement in those conditions. The oils have natural anti-inflammatory activity. In some cases, they are nearly as effective as aspirin. They are also as effective as aspirin for inhibiting blood clots. But, the oils are not accompanied by the risks associated with regular aspirin use.
The effectiveness of supplements on the market varies for several reasons. First, since the fish oil vitamin benefits are due primarily to the omega3 content, those supplements that contain lower percentage of omega3s are less effective.
The DHA content varies greatly as well, with some supplements providing less than 100mg per dose. The better supplements provide a minimum of 280mg per capsule. The recommended daily dosage for adults is two capsules, which would provide 560mg of DHA. This amount has been used in studies concerning depression and other health problems.
Some supplements contain the natural triglycerides. Others contain a distilled ester. A few products contain a combination of the two. The natural triglycerides have more anti-inflammatory activity than the esters, but provide fewer omega3s. The combination products provide the best of both.
