Recreational Vehicles or RVs are vehicles equipped with living space and amenities that are found in one’s home.
Generally it is known as a home away from home, it is usually used by families for camping and vacation.
They are also used by some as mobile offices for business travelers that include office amenities such as a desk space, a generator, internet satellite and an upgraded electrical system.
This is the choice home for travelers who do not want to spend as much on motels and restaurants.
However, there are also dangers in using an RV. An RV can be considered as a truck because of its size. Because of its sheer size and maneuverability issues which may be similar to a truck, it is also prone to accidents
Some of the major causes of RV accidents are:
• Inexperienced driver – An RV is much more difficult to drive than other vehicles. Because of its size, it creates a lot of blind spots.. A driver who does not have much experience will have difficulty in seeing traffic from the sides and behind, and will also have difficulty calculating the turns.
• Overloading – A lot of people forget that although an RV looks like a house, it is still a vehicle. Some people overload the RV that the body and the wheels of the vehicle could no longer support the whole weight. This can result to a blown out tire which is particularly dangerous while the vehicle is moving.
• Unbalanced load – An RV whose load is not balanced on both sides will be much more difficult to drive especially on turns where one side is heavier than the other.
• Height – Because of its height, RVs also have a higher center of gravity which makes it susceptible to vehicle rollovers.
• Defective parts – A defective part like a wheel that cannot handle the weight of an RV can cause a blown out tire and a defective electrical system can set the RV on fire.
To prevent RV accidents, you can follow the following tips:
• Keep the RV in good condition – Do not forget that an RV is still a vehicle; check the engine, oil, brakes, tires etc. before venturing out.
• Balance the load – Most manufacturers make sure that the RV is balanced to prevent accidents. Make sure that when you’re adding load on the vehicle that it does not tilt too much on one direction.
• Park on designated spots – There are designated spots where RVs can park and stay. An example would be RV parks where there is electricity available.
• Bring a camera – If you are going camping, the family is already bound to have a camera on board. But in case of an accident, it will come in handy in getting details about the accidents which would really help your claim with the insurance company.
If you have been involved in an RV accident, the best move you can take is to seek assistance from an RV accident attorney who can help you sort through your options and be able to get what you deserve in terms of the damages caused by the accident.
