Sri Lanka is a country with much to offer, from diverse and beautiful scenery to cultural and historical sites. However, for more active holiday makers, holidays in Sri Lanka are perfect for a range of exciting activities and adventures.
Mountain Biking
Many people don’t really think of Sri Lanka as a destination for mountain biking. But it is!
In fact, here you will find some of the best mountain biking routes in the world. From challenging mountain paths to pleasant coastal trails, the terrain suits mountain bikers of all abilities.
Experienced bikers can head into the Knuckles Mountain Range during their Sri Lanka holidays, The Knuckles Mountains are so called because they are shaped like a fist, with each ridge resembling a knuckle. For those seeking a less mountainous experience, the ancient trade routes and hunting paths offer a great way to see the country by bike. The trails will take your through tea plantations, jungles and lush valleys and some of the must-see sites for those on Sri Lanka holidays, such as the remains of the ancient cities of Sigirya, Polonnaruwa and Anaradhapura are best visited by bike. In fact, whatever style of holiday you consider, it is well worth spending a day or two exploring the country by bike.
White-Water Rafting
Another activity that most people do not immediately associate with, when it comes to Sri Lanka holidays, is white-water rafting. This exhilarating sport is an excellent way to view the beautiful natural wonders of the country, while hurtling down its rivers.
The Kelani Ganga River is just one example of a superb white-water rafting area, where you can experience rapids with terrifying names such as Killer Falls and Head Chopper. For those seeking more of an adrenaline rush, higher grade rapids can be found in the Sitawaka Ganga and the Kotmale Ganga.
Hot Air Ballooning
What better way to experience the country’s natural beauty than from the sky? Hot air balloon rides usually depart from the Cultural Triangle and will take you high above spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Sites and national parks, where you can gaze down over wild elephants and the great rock of Sigiriya.
Diving and Snorkelling
Sri Lanka holidays often conjure up images of idyllic beaches and warm waters. What most people don’t realise is that, just beyond these beautiful beaches are stunning coral reefs, populated with brightly coloured fish and offering some fascinating ship wrecks too. For snorkelling and scuba enthusiasts, this country is an underwater heaven not to be missed.
