The city of Melbourne grew outwards from the banks of the Yarra River and many of the sights to see in the city today are focused around it. There are plenty of things to do if you are staying in the neighbourhood, including taking a leisurely stroll along the riverside where it’s possible to walk for miles and forget that you are even in the city. Along the sides of the river you will pass scenic parklands and the beautiful Royal Botanical Gardens which hide the city buildings from your view.
There is a lot happening on the Yarra River, if you are visiting during the New Year then consider booking a river cruise. Various companies organize dinners and parties at this time of year. What nicer way can you think of than sailing upon the river with the city lights twinkling in the distance, still partying but away from the crowds of drunken revelers and busy bars? A cruise boat offers the best seats for the city fireworks to celebrate New Year, as well as tasty food, wine and an exciting atmosphere. Fun and exciting when spent with a group of friends, or romantic if spent with a loved one.
A New Years Eve dinner cruise will supply good food, dancing and the perfect spot to see Melbourne’s firework display. Enjoy a 3 course dinner with friends, family, or a loved one and the leading names in wines, beers and spirits, generally included in the price. Everyone wants to dance on New Years Eve and high-tech sound systems or DJ’s play a medley of old favourites, popular and modern music. Say hello to 2010 by doing something completely different this year.
If you like to party on New Years Eve then choose a party cruise for the 2009 countdown. The principles are the same as a dinner cruise with front row seats for the fireworks at midnight and free food and drinks included, however a party boat will usually offer a buffet dinner, all drinks free and a live DJ with dance floor on board.
River cruise boats generally depart from the waterside around 8 in the evening and return you to the same place just after midnight, this gives you time to have a dinner, then sit back for a few drinks and see the New Year in. Boats pick up/depart from Federation Wharf and Southgate.
If your heart is set on a river cruise for this special time of year then you should book in advance to avoid disappointment. It gets busy as people are looking for a novel way to celebrate and events can get booked up quickly and seats will be limited.
Of course you don’t have to wait for the New Year to take a cruise, there are lots of daily tours organized on most days and the on-board guide will have lots of interesting facts and information to give you about popular city sights. Spend a relaxing hour or so cruising down the Yarra River whilst learning about the historical Victoria Docks and early settlers.
If this is your first time visiting Melbourne then a boat trip can be the perfect way to experience the city. Boats are equipped with large panoramic windows giving you a good view all round, sun decks and other onboard amenities. Leaving from various points 4 or 5 times a day, some of the highlights you can expect to see include Southgate Arts and Leisure Precinct, the World Congress and Trade Center, Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Center and Westgate Bridge.
If you are looking for a Melbourne hotel close to the Yarra River then check online for a choice of budget, and 3, 4 and 5 star hotels. Booking online is easy and convenient and the range of accommodation available will guarantee you find something to suit your requirements.
