4 Effects A DUI Has On Your Friends & Family

A DUI isn't something that only the convicted has to deal with. Many times, driving under the influence has a spiderweb effect of impacting the people around the arrested. A DUI or DWI has the ability to effect not only your life, but also your friends' and familys' reputation, financial situations and social habits. Here are four effects a DUI has on your friends and family.
- Transportation
When you get arrested for driving while impaired, the loss of your drivers license is very likely. My Seattle DIU attorneys at Bradley Johnson Lawyers tell me that the length of the punishment varies depending on state and severity of the crime, but you are looking at a minimum of two months without driving privileges.
Because of this, you are going to have to rely on other forms of transportation. This usually entails walking, riding a bicycle, using public transportation or asking for rides. Not all of these options are viable everywhere. For example, you aren't going to walk or bike to your job that is 15 miles away. Also, your chances of getting a bus, train, subway or taxi in small town USA is not a very good possibility. When it comes down to it, you are going to be looking to your friends and family for rides. While most decent loved ones will gladly help you out, it can be a burden for them.
- Publicity
In most states, they publicize DUI arrests. This is one of the best deterrent measures lawmakers take, as the embarrassment of this type of conviction often outweighs the other punishments. Word of mouth carries news of a DUI very quickly to a wide audience.
This kind of poor publicity can be embarrassing not only to you, but your family. They will no doubt be asked about it by friends and coworkers. It can be an uncomfortable situation for them to constantly be questioned about a mistake you made.
- Money
I've talked to several lawyers throughout the country, from Seattle DIU lawyers to Philadelphia attorneys, and there seems to be a very broad range of financial obligations associated with a DUI. The fines and costs of a DUI can vary due to state, situation of arrest and what the judge feels is a mandatory punishment.
Regardless of the exact financial obligation, it is more often than not a substantial amount of money. You can either pay this money out of pocket or borrow from lending institutions. If you do not have the money and cannot secure a loan, you will be looking to friends and family for financial assistance. More often than not, they will help...but realize the financial burden of doing so.
- Limited Sociability
The details of probation that go along with your DUI could very well bar you from institutions that serve alcohol. If you are a young adult who relies on the bar scene as your social outlet, this could have a huge effect on your social life. In addition, close friends and family that you socialize with will feel your absence. Although this is far from the most serious issue, it will still effect the arrested and his or her peers.
