Arms and legs play very significant roles in our daily activities. Needless to say, the loss of one’s limbs will greatly impact one’s finances and ability to care for himself.
A common accident which has been known to cause this terrible condition is a car collision. As in any personal injury case, the party who is totally or partially liable, be it the driver or the manufacturer, will be legally responsible in paying compensatory, and probably punitive, damages.
Medical experts resort to amputation usually as a result of badly broken bones that cannot be rehabilitated. This is common in severe collisions wherein the victim is crushed by vehicle parts or is thrown off to the pavement because of the impact.
Product Liability in Malfunctions
After the amputation, the victim is likely to have issues that needs to be resolved with the help of a psychiatrist, medical treatments that will negatively affect his family’s finances, and also suffer a compromised way of living.
Because of this, product manufacturers who released defective vehicles and parts should face liability and shoulder the expenses that the victim and his family would have to endure.
Aside from paying the damages, they must issue recalls and warnings to other motorists who might suffer the same fate as the victim with amputated legs.
These manufacturers must minimize their liability as much as they can so as to avoid massive payouts to victims of their product’s malfunction.
Driver’s Liability
Motorists should be cautious in driving. Even in single-vehicle crashes, the driver can still be charged with negligence if any of his passengers were hurt or private and public properties were damaged.
To avoid liability, motorists must avoid driving when drunk; keep their speed within limits, and be alert and cautious of other vehicles around them.
Other Car Accidents Injuries
Aside from death, these accidents can also cause catastrophic injuries which are likely to burden victims throughout their lives. Aside from loss of limbs, here are some of the injuries that will limit one’s mobility:
• Blindness – Glass shards can get into the occupant’s eyes and damage the retina and cause blindness. Pieces of glass must be removed by an expert immediately after the accident so as not to cause further damage.
• Spinal injuries – The impact of the collision can cause the person to land on his back or crash it onto any hard surface which can damage the spinal cord. Nerves here play an important part in transmitting signals to the brain and so paralysis is almost definite when the spine is badly damaged. Sometimes, the limbs may often be left whole but immobile.
• Head and brain injuries. Concussions are often present in victims of car crashes. Depending on the damage, the person can suffer from superficial wounds or brain damage which will place him under constant care.
The above are just some of the possible long-term injuries that a victim of collision can suffer from.
To avoid these, bystanders must be careful in moving the body so as not to worsen the victim’s condition. If spinal cord injury is suspected, it is best to wait for experienced rescuers to move the body to prevent further damage.
