Aromatherapy is the process of using fragrances, namely essential oils, for their physical and emotional benefits. For example, the fragrances used can affect a person by stimulating or calming through the sense of smell. Aromatherapy is also sometimes considered to have spiritual benefits as well. The idea and practice of aromatherapy has been around for centuries. It is increasing in popularity in the United States, due to hectic lifestyles and the need many people feel to remove stress and create calm. Many people believe that the essential oils used in aromatherapy have great power to heal, and can be used for different ailments. Although in the USA, aromatherapy is generally considered an alternative medicine, doctors in some other countries actually prescribe essential oils as part of healing and wellness regimens.
Essential oils are highly concentrated extracts of plant material that retain a fragrance crucial to the art of aromatherapy. These aromatherapy oils can be used in many different ways. Aromatherapy massage oils are often used as aromatherapy treatment. This can include stress relief as well as other areas such as pain management during childbirth. As well, essential oils can be placed in oil burners and used to scent a room. Candles are often another way that aromatherapy oils can be used.
Many people consider themselves actual practitioners of aromatherapy, and offer their services and education to others. Other aromatherapy is a general type of occasional use at home by interested persons who are somewhat familiar with the practice. Many times, aromatherapy can have benefits in the home simply through the use of a purchased product. Sometimes, the essential oils are put into lotions, creams, shampoos, or facial cleansers, allowing aromatherapy to take place through the use of everyday health and beauty items. It is very important to note that aromatherapy is something that is studied carefully and should be practiced with caution. Because the essential oils used in aromatherapy can be very potent, it is important to take the proper precautions when attempting to mix any substances together.
Whether one is interested in learning about aromatherapy in great depth or just applying aromatherapy techniques occasionally throughout everyday life, this practice is something that is enjoyable for many.
