We all know that we should get our exercise. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommend 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week. That evens out to five 30-minute exercise sessions weekly. There is a good reason, actually several good reasons, behind this recommendation. There are many benefits of exercise.
First, exercise helps you maintain a healthy weight. Those with a body weight above recommendations are at higher risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Problems with bones and joints are also associated with being overweight.
The benefits of exercise include an improved mood. When you exercise, your body releases endorphins. Endorphins, sometimes called the feel-good hormones, leave you feeling happy and relaxed. Some research has shown that a daily walk can have outstanding results in patients with depression.
Exercise can extend your life. Regular aerobic activities help increase levels of high-density lipoproteins (LDL), the so-called good cholesterol. It also reduces triglyceride levels. This aids in the prevention of buildup in the arteries, which is common in those with heart problems.
Some research indicates that exercise can also lower cancer risk. In women, exercise can reduce levels of the hormones estradiol and progesterone, both culprits linked to breast cancer occurrence. Since fat aids in the production of estradiol, the weight loss benefits of exercise also help reduce cancer risk.
Bone and joint health is one of the many benefits of exercise. It helps you shed excess weight, which can put a strain on joints. It also strengthens bones. This reduces the risk of osteoporosis, a condition characterized by brittle bones and frequent fractures.
Exercise can help you get a better night's sleep. Many of us don't get the recommended amount of sleep each night even when we try. Exercising can help relieve the tension that may be keeping you awake and relax you where you can finally get the shut-eye your body needs. The key is to not exercise too close to bedtime.
If you are getting enough sleep, but still lack energy, you may not be exercising enough. Exercise helps your heart and lungs work more efficiently, freeing up energy for other things. Instead of feeling tired, you can get out and play with your kids or enjoy a night out dancing with your significant other.
One of the lesser known benefits of exercise is its effects on your sex life. When you are tired and overweight, your libido is at its lowest. Research has proven that men who exercise are less likely to experience sexual difficulties such as erectile dysfunction. Women can benefit as well from the increased arousal.
With so many benefits of exercise, there's no reason to put it off any longer. If you're new to working out, just take things slow. Also, keep in mind that exercise doesn't have to be boring. Playing tag with your kids, dancing with your significant other or hiking with friends can all be ways to get your recommended amount of exercise.
