Belly fat (yes, that's right, an 'it') produces a hormone called NPY (short for Neuropeptide Y). This hormone was once thought only to be produced by the brain but Canadian researchers discovered that belly fat also produced NPY in substantial amounts.

This is one of the reasons why obese people tend to eat more than average people because of increased levels of NPY. The presence of NPY can make you feel hungry for quite some time. And because it makes you feel hungry, you eat more, your appetite eventually increases and as a result, you become fatter (which is obviously not what you want).

However, there have been many ways developed to help people you lose weight - and even more specifically, belly fat. Some of these ways include:

1.Eating whole grains: A group of researchers at the University of Pennsylvania found out that obese adults at the risk of heart disease who consumed whole grains lost more abdominal weight than those who didn't eat whole grains.

2.Reducing stress levels: Stress is often caused by the secretion of the cortisol hormone which also promotes depositing of fat into the abdomen. To reduce your stress levels, exercise, proper rest and doing things like tai chi can help you calm down and thus lose weight.

3.Eat blueberries: Recent studies have shown that a diet rich in blueberries actually reduces abdominal fat. Researchers suggest that the antioxidant properties in blueberries may be responsible for changing the way the body stores and processes food.

Although there seems to be no positive correlation, there is a strong statistical link between smoking and the weight of a person. It is highly advised that you should stop smoking (if you haven't already done so, unless you're a non-smoker) as this may increase your risk of gaining abdominal weight.

Losing weight is not all about what you eat but also what you do with what you eat. Doing regular muscle toning exercises can help reduce fat and you can target this on your abdomen only so that you'll reduce your belly fat. Other fat burning exercises include walking, jogging, running, cycling and cardio exercises. Everyone has differing body shapes so results may vary, nevertheless, weight loss is better than no weight loss.
