It has been reported that hair straightening contributes to the number of hair thinning causes if used incorrectly.
Hair straighteners are unique as they smooth the cuticle of the hair which gives the illusion of straight silky hair. Each year they are becoming more popular with women.
It is important that hair straighteners are used correctly as improper use may cause hair breakage and possibly hair loss. If you have never used one previously it would be best to seek advice from a hairdresser.
The best practice would be to use hair straighteners no more than twice a week or reserve it for just special occasions as you do not want to be applying excessive heat to your hair which can weaken it. The hair may even eventually snap off due to the overuse of hair straighteners and particularly if you have chemicals in the hair such as bleach which has already weakened the hair structure. To help put moisture back in the hair you could apply conditioning treatments at least once a week.
If you must straighten your hair every day the best thing would be to wash your hair in the evening and air dry it overnight. Before you use the hair straightener ensure your hair is completely dry or you could be at risk of hair breakage. A heat protectant is good to use prior to hair straightening to protect the hair from damage. Once you have finished straightening your hair, you could apply serum to prevent any frizz from forming.
The last thing that you want is to burn your scalp with the hair straightener so it is best to section the hair off and start at least 1cm from the scalp. If you have difficulty straightening your hair, get a friend to help you or visit your local hairdressing salon.
If you have extremely frizzy hair which is difficult to manage you may possibly want to blow wave it straight prior to applying the hair straightener as you will get a smoother finish. Normally you should only go over the hair twice as anymore could drastically dry out the hair and cause unwanted frizz.
When selecting a hair straightener it would be advisable to choose one with a temperature control setting as you do want to be using one at constantly 200 degrees C.
If you wear a wig or hair piece such as a hair weft you want to ensure that it is possible to apply heat directly.
There are a number of hair thinning causes associated with constant straightening of the hair so it is best to always be careful when using it.
