Have you ever seen your favorite celebrity flaunting her flawless hair on a new shampoo commercial, and the next thing you know, you’re running out to buy the shampoo? Women have been choosing hair cuts, hair products and hair accessories based on this scenario for a long time. Even when the desired look is not natural for their hair type. But did you know that doing this gives your hair gets only a fraction of the attention that it needs?
Each hair type—fine, curly, straight, or coarse—is quite different in texture and needs its own set of hair products to address its needs. That’s why we have rounded up the best quick fixes for each type so you can find the right love for your locks.
FINE HAIR
If you have fine hair, then you are more prone to get hair product buildup. That means a greasier scalp and limper hair. To wash away hair product residue, use a deep-cleansing shampoo daily. End with a light conditioner to repair split ends.
To style it, use a mousse or gel that is packed with vitamins so that your hair’s weaker fibers can be strengthened. Since your hair is fine, avoid rich, silicone-heavy serums that will only weigh your hair down. Give it volume by doing some back-combing or heat-styling to get romantic curls. Waves give the best illusion of volume. Sweep your hair to the side and secure with a dainty hair clip for a very feminine look.
MEDIUM TO THICK HAIR
If you have medium to thick hair, then you are more than likely struggling with frizz. Stepping outside exposes your hair to the elements, and when it’s humid, that stubborn frizz just comes right back! Fight back by using moisturizing shampoos and conditioners.
When styling medium to thick hair, remember that it is most fragile when wet. So if you intend to heat-style it, protect weak hair cuticles with heavy smoothing creams first. You can also consider using an ionic flatiron with ceramic plates to bond broken cuticles back. But the easiest way to disguise frizz is by simply wearing a flamboyant headband that helps distract the eye!
CURLY HAIR
Natural oil from the scalp does not slip down curly hair strands as easily as it does on straight hair, so curly hair tends to be dry. This means you can skip washing it every single day; every three or four days is enough, so you don’t strip it of even more of its natural oil.
To style it, remember that curly hair meshes together, so it catches hair products well. While your hair is damp, work in a light gel or serum. For a crunch-free finish, spritz a curl-defining spray on the underside of your hair. As for combing, avoid brushes because they may cause breakage. A detangling comb is your best friend.
Hair like yours already looks good as it is, but you can always add a little pizzazz by putting on sophisticated hair accessories.
COARSE HAIR
If you have coarse hair then your locks are thirsty! Therefore, hydration is the key. Instead of regular conditioners, opt for leave-in conditioners daily, and hydrating masks at least once a week. Plus, go ahead and treat yourself to monthly at-home scalp conditioners!
Your hair does lack moisture, so putting it under heat will dry it out even more. If you must heat-style, then look for a styling iron that has a heat gauge on it.
