When shopping around for your next BJJ Gi you will notice that most Jiu Jitsu Gi’s are classified by the type of fabric or "weave" used. When someone refers to the weave used on the BJJ Gi, they are referring to the gi top or gi jacket and not the gi pants. However, the Gi pants usually will be as durable as the Gi top you buy. The most common names for the fabric or "weaves" used to make you Bjj Gi would be the Single Weave, Double Weave and Gold Weave.

Single weave gi’s are the most basic Jiu Jitsu Gi and are usually the lightest. A single weave Bjj Gi will also be the most affordable gi from a certain company since there is much less fabric used. The pros to buying a single weave gi would of course be the low price and the lightness of the Gi which is perfect for Jiu Jitsu Competition. Also, due to their lightness they are often a good choice for training during the heat of the summer. The cons to this Bjj Gi would have to be it is not as durable as a Gold or Double Weave Gi and will not last you as long as the heavier Jiu Jitsu Gi’s on the market.

Double weave gi’s are usually more expensive than a single weave gi and are also made much heavier. The fabric or the way these kimonos are stitched up make very little difference as the main difference between the fabrics used are the weight of the Bjj Gi. The pros to this Bjj Gi would be the weight adds on strength and durability to the kimono. These gi’s also make it more difficult for your opponent to grab a hold of you since they are made much thicker than a single or any light gi. The cons however, would be they are too heavy and people these days like a much lighter Bjj Gi to compete and train in. They may even be a little uncomfortable and takes a lot to wash and dry them. If you compete regularly and are close to your weight you should not choose to compete in a Double Weave Gi.

Gold weave gi’s are a more popular weave compared to the double and single weave. Some Jiu Jitsu Gi companies have made their gold weave gi’s very light and some have made their gold weave gi’s very heavy so this fabric has been played around with. Gold weave gi’s were actually made to ensure uniformity for competition by IBJJF, however this is no longer enforced. All types of Jiu-Jitsu Gi’s are allowable for competition now. Recently, there has been new types of fabrics coming out such as the Pearl Weave Gi, Hybrid Gi, Honey Weave Comb, etc. Make sure to choose the right Bjj Gi and train hard!
