Beginner golf swing instruction can sometimes be a little confusing when it doesn't need to be. If you're just beginning to golf you just need to learn the fundamental principles, which make up a good golf swing.

As a beginner you don't want to get any more complex than that when first learning the golf swing. So in this article I'm going to take you through the basic mechanics of the golf swing and in just three steps help you to learn a golf swing which will produce good, solid shots on a consistent basis.

Step One: Set-up

A lot of the beginner golf swing instruction out there doesn't really emphasize the important of a good set-up, after all it's 'swing' instruction, but that's an error on their part.

You see even if you learn a great swing and produce a great swing it will not matter if you don't have a good set-up, you will still produce mediocre shots. However if you have a really great set-up then you will be able to produce decent shots much easier, even when you're just beginning to learn how to swing.

So first if all take your club and your grip, now whatever grip you use you really want to make sure that it is nice and neutral. To do this check that the 'Vs' formed by the thumb and forefinger on both hands point towards your right ear.

Next put your clubhead square behind the ball and ensure that the face of your club is facing the target. Then take your stance, your feet should be about shoulder width apart for your mid irons, for short irons a little narrower, for the driver a little wider.

Your weight should be evenly balanced between both feet for your middle irons, for your shorter irons slightly more weight should be on the front foot and for your longer clubs more weight should be on the back foot.

Then bend forward slightly at the hips and bend your knees slightly so you have a good knee flex. Next you want to ensure that you're aligned correctly, so your feet, hips and shoulders should all be parallel to your target line. Your target line refers to the imaginary line which runs from your ball to your target.

Step Two: Backswing

You want to take the club back low to the ground. A good backswing begins by rotating the body and arms back in a nice simultaneous "one-piece" movement.

You really want to concentrate on sweeping the club back. Be careful that you don't begin the backswing with the arms, as this tends to cause you to 'lift' the club up rather than sweeping it back.

On the backswing your left arm should remain straight as you bring the club back. As you swing to the top ensure that you keep your eye on the ball. It's important that you hinge your wrists as you bring the club back and transfer your weight onto the back foot (your right foot if you're right-handed).

During the backswing your hips should complete their rotation before your shoulders. So your shoulders continue to rotate to the top of the backswing then at this position your left shoulder should be around where your right shoulder was at address.

At the top of the backswing you should have rotated the shoulders around your spinal axis until your back is facing your target. At this point you want to have more weight on your back foot, about 75%.

Step Three: The Downswing & Impact

In order to swing back through and hit your ball, your focus needs to be on shifting your weight forward, towards your target. The downswing starts by rotating your hips and body back towards your target and shifting your weight onto your front foot (your left foot if you're right handed).

You want to let the arms drop and swing down naturally whilst maintaining the correct angle between the hands and the club. To ensure that you're shifting your weight correctly you really want to feel your right knee swing in towards your left leg.

On the downswing your club should come back through on the same path on which you took it back on in the backswing.

At the moment of impact the majority of your weight should be on your front foot. Rotation continues through impact until your belly button ends facing the target.

Good Luck...

If you follow this simple beginner golf swing instruction, put it into action and practice, then you will develop a really great golf swing.
