Knowing what to look for in protein powders can mean the difference between doubling your exercise production by boosting thyroid and muscle protein synthesis or totally doing the opposite. There are many manufacturers that provide protein powders and claim that they have quality products but be aware of certain wording that appears on the ingredient label to protect your body from potential harm.
Commercialized whey products are commonly derived from pasteurized dairy products that are processed through heat and acid. This type of process not only destroys the molecular structure of the whey but also can have added artificial sweeteners. Look for whey products that are minimal in processing and use only grass fed, non-hormonally treated cows. The more heat and acid that is used, the less benefit you will receive from the immuno components of whey that include bovine serum albomin, lactoferins and immunoglobins.
Long chain fatty acids can create an irritable stomach because they are not as easily digested as those made with medium chain fatty acids or MCTs. Being selective in a good quality protein powder can help your pancreas-produced insulin work better and stabilize blood sugar levels. Your blood pressure levels will also stay within the normal range during your workout.
One of the latest fears that have been realized in some protein powders is the discovery of toxins such as arsenic, cadmium, mercury and lead. Consumer Reports tested 15 protein drinks and found three products that contained levels of toxins high enough to be a health hazard by consuming three servings a day.
Protein powders that are made from whey are an excellent source of protein but can also help curb your appetite. According to USA Today, it has been found to be more beneficial for your system to exercise on an empty stomach. However, if exercising on an empty stomach causes you to become lightheaded and weak, try a protein drink before your session. This will keep your hunger at bay and not interfere with achieving your results. Always check with your doctor before altering your nutrition plan.
The biggest thing to remember about shopping for quality protein powders is that not all products are created equal. Find a manufacturer that you can trust or get a recommendation from your gym or trainer to make sure that you are not posing a health risk to your body. Your investigation will be well worth the results that you are hoping for.
