Paintballing has become popular worldwide. An effective way to simulate combat with much of the realism and little of the danger, paintballing is a one way to meet people, get exercise and sharpen the instincts.
There are different settings in which one can have paintball wars. Often matches are held in open fields. In these matches, inflatable or fixed barriers of different colors are placed around the field of play in order to provide color. Some of these matches are even held indoor. Conversely, many matches are held in forested areas with little more than the natural cover provided by the trees. Sometimes, however, these forest combat areas are accessorized with paintball bunkers and barriers made of everything from old cars to plywood walls to shipping pallets and spools. Ditches are often dug, as well, to provide extra cover.
There are many types of paintball matches, the most popular of which is capture the flag. In this game type, two opposing teams face each other, each trying to capture the other's flag, which begins the game in that team's territory. A player, once capturing the other team's flag, usually a piece of cloth or actual flag, must then survive with the flag until he takes it back his own team's base. If he is shot, he must drop the flag, where it can be picked up either by his own teammate and carried on to the base, or a member of the opposite team, who will return it to its original place. When a player is shot, he must stand up, raise his hands, and leave the field of play until the next round begins.
It is important when paintballing to wear protective equipment. Though paintballs are nonlethal and designed to burst on impact, they are fired at high speeds and are therefore hazardous to the eyes, mouth and nose. It is important to wear a full face mask when paintballing. Most players also prefer to wear comfortable paintball apparel, such as long trousers and sleeves, as well, to absorb some of the impact and prevent welts or bruises on the skin when hit.
There are two main types of paintball guns. The first type, pump action paintball guns, are low-powered, single-shot weapons usually considered amateur and ineffective among major paintballers. The other type are pneumatic, powered by compressed carbon dioxide canisters. These compact, modular canisters provide a large power and range advantage over pump action paintball guns and are easy to change in the field.
