Acidophilus is a bacterium that is used to make yogurt and supplement probiotics. This bacteria has a beneficial connection with the stomach, it helps break down food molecules and hinders the growth of harmful bacteria. When people have bacterial, yeast infections, digestive problems or are on antibiotics it will help fight such infections. Lactobacillus acidophilus is typically thought to be essential because it produces vitamin K, lactase, and anti-microbial substances such as acidolin, acidolphilin, lactocidin, and bacteriocin.

When digested into the stomach, acidophilus breaks down hydrogen peroxide which kills bad yeast. When it is not in the stomach, yeast can take over the lining of the stomach and the intestinal track. Foods high in carbohydrates and sugars will build yeast and releases gasses, making the stomach feel bloated and gassy. As it breaks apart the proteins, it assists with the digestion of fats, lowering cholesterol levels in the blood. It can assist with digestion of milk sugars into simple sugars and digestion for people with lactose intolerance.
