Looking for a great place to go camping in South Georgia, then have a look at The Parks of Chehaw located in Albany Georgia. This park has over 700 hundred acres of recreational opportunities and every visitor is sure to find one that will fulfill their fantasy of being in the outdoors. The park consists of tall Georgia Pine Trees which shade the entire park with patches of wiregrass growing throughout the park. In addition, the conservation of the land allows for an abundance of wildlife to roam the park freely.

Upon entering the park the road will be for traffic going both directions then the road turns right making it one way traffic which winds through the park. With this road being paved it makes for ideal bicycle riding. Keep your eyes open though, the road around the park can have some pretty good scenery, watch for white tailed deer running through the canopy of trees, or otters crossing the roadway, see if you can spot the many species of birds that call this park their home. Felling energetic, try the one mile walking trail, I heard it was great. The interior of the circle is where Festivals and Events are held. A must see event is when the park goes back in time when Indians occupied this land. An educational experience that will leave lasting memories for anyone that attends.

Like fishing, this park has a great fishing pond stocked with Brim, Catfish, and there may be some Bigmouth Bass in there too. I’m not telling. Pond fishing not for you, try Lake Chehaw, when you enter the front gate take a left and this road will lead to the lake. There is a boat dock and ample shore line to fish from. Amenities at the lake include: picnic table, pavilion, and grills.

One of the best attractions in the park is Chehaw Animal Park which is dedicated to educating people on animals in their natural habitat. This park allows for visitors’ to leisurely stroll along the boardwalks and through cypress swamps to see animals like the Zebras and Cheetahs in their natural habitat. In all, the park has 55 species of wild animals for your viewing pleasure. The Meerkat Maze is a perfect place for children to learn about Meerkat social life and their typical living arrangements. After the zoo, hope aboard the Wiregrass Express for a twenty minute scenic tour of the park’s restoration area.

The park has activities for any age group, from toddlers to the older teens. The play park is large enough to keep any child playing for hours. All around the play park are pavilions with picnic tables and grills. An ideal location for family gatherings and picnics. Next to the play park is the Disc Golf Course where one can learn the rules of golf while mastering their skills of Frisbee. If you are a motocross enthusiast, try the BMX racing track. Visitors can ride this track anytime during park hours as long as you have a bike and helmet. Anyone with a NBL membership can participate in sanctioned races.

Chehaw’s campground is one of the best in the area with its canopy of Georgia Pines and patches of saw grass. The campground is located within a short walking distance of all the amenities the park has to offer. Inside the campground are two circles one for RVs and one for tent campers. All sites have water and electric with some having full hookup. Don’t have a camper or tent try one of the log cabins located in the RV camping circle. All camp sites have a picnic table and fire ring with flip-top grill for fun gatherings.

In the late afternoon underneath the peacefulness of the canopy of trees is a great time to get together with fellow campers or family members for some outdoor cooking. Although I have gas grills, I find it enjoyable at times to use the campsite fire ring. I just put my cooking-grate over it and fill the air with the aroma of food grilling. Even the squirrels running in and out of the tall pines will stop and smell the air.
