Located just across the road from the Coliseum Inn, Edmonton, Alberta, Rexall Place is a major landmark and indoor arena that hosts a variety of events. Known as the home of the Edmonton Oilers and the Edmonton Rush and Edmonton Oil Kings, Rexall Place is one of the oldest venues in the NHL. However, the facilities are state-of-the-art.

A brief history of Rexall Place, Edmonton

Originally known as the Northlands Coliseum for its location, Rexall Place housed the World Hockey Association Oilers named after the owners of the arena. Subsequently it became Edmonton Coliseum and Skyreach Center before it settled on the present day Rexall Place after the naming rights were bought by Rexall Medicine Company, owned by the Katz group which also owns the Oilers and Oil Kings.

A historic venue

Rexall Place is the venue for many major sports events such as the Commonwealth Games, Canadian Finals Rodeo, Canada Cup Hockey Tournaments, World Junior Championships and much more. The most-loved event however is the National Hockey League. The Edmonton Oilers are the reigning heroes with the unbeaten record of winning five cups in a row. The Oilers’ dressing room at the arena that was renovated at $3.5 million is among the most stylish with its own medical and recreational facilities including a lounge and individual video, bar and weight rooms.

Currently, Rexall Place’s capacity is 16,839 after its extensive renovation in 1994. It features sixty seven luxury suites. The Katz Group has plans to build a new arena to replace Rexall Place sometime in the future and they propose to locate it in Downtown Edmonton.
